Couldn't think of a single comeback for my right-wing-nut father-in-law |
|
This is what he actually said:
"Obama will end up being the most incompetant president in US history. George Bush was a genius. And, every trouble that exists today was Clinton's fault."
All I could say was "That's absolutely crazy". I usually can take his stuff, but last night I just got enraged and had to walk away.

Because the numbers I have are pretty much proving him wrong. Hell, I'm no huge Clinton fan but the financial numbers were in his favor.
And on the negative and nasty side...how many years do you think the old codger has in him?

8. The best comeback for any comparison |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 02:10 PM by DontTreadOnMe
When comparing Bush to Obama... I always resort to:
"Well at least Obama can speak in complete sentences."
Then I follow it up with:
"When Bush was asked, 'How come you can't find Osama Bin Laden'?"
Bush answered: "Because he is hiding".
Then proclaim we need someone who is smart as President, like someone who graduated from Havard. It usually will silence even the most hardened Repug.

I have a step-grandfather who does the same thing. "Ann Coulter is a genius!" he declares, "We should kill all them god damned Muslims and save everyone else the trouble!"
I don't think he honestly believes this... but the people on the right are, basically, attention whores who thrive off antagonistic relationships. he's bored, so he wants to pick a fight with someone in the ratehr liberal-leaning household. Inevitably someone takes a nibble and then we're all taken down the broad and winding path of Reagan's greatness, then eed to obliterate every nation in the world, the evil of evolution, and the whole Clenis Cult spiel. All in one argument.

I've found the best way to deal with them is to either look at them in silence and then change the subject completely, or say "You're right", and then change the subject.
Some people might say this amounts to actually aiding and abetting the stupidity, but I don't think so. There are a few types of people in this world you just do NOT bother arguing with...
drunks...people with dementia...and attention whores
don't even bother because you will get absolutely nowhere.

IMO, to feel like you've come out better in an exchange like that, a lot of it is adopting an attitude of nonchalance and asking your interlocutor to support or substantiate (not prove) his or her opinion. As Elvis Costello sang: "I used to be disgusted. Now I try to be amused."

I told him that no president can do worse then starting two quagmires, letting a city practically disappear into the ocean, taking a surplus to a huge crippling debt, and taking a fairly robust economy and letting it tank. And if everything is Clinton's fault then when the next president comes in that means that everything will be Bush's fault since we are blaming presidents 8 years back. You got to be sarcastic. There is more you can say but that is a start.

Laugh in their face. Look at the person next to them and ask "Isn't dementia a sad thing?" "How's that trickle down working for you?" works well on one of my friends who now lives in someone else's basement after losing most of his business in the bush years. I think quick, sharp, brutal responses are the only thing that will work. Trying to reason with them is useless. You can't fight crazy, you can't reason with unreasonable.
