On top of that, it frames Gregg as looking flaky (or sketchy) for asking to be included, then backing out.

He keeps painting the Repukes into a corner: They can't stand the idea of helping him be successful, but they'll look like asses who want him to fail if they refuse his obvious, repeated and public efforts.

Tough spot for them.
