It is seems pretty obvious - Gregg was worried about vetting. |

He obviously wanted the position - practically begged for it.
He has no rationale for not getting it - the canard about the 2010 census is laughable, as Commerce Secretary he would have a great deal more influence than the Senator from NH.
It really is fun to see this guy twist in the wind after he puts himself in the noose.
So what was it? Tax problems? Not paying the SS for the nanny? Doing something naughty?
Take a tip from Alex Rodriguez and get it all out there now Gregg rather than waiting for the drip drip drip.

4. WEll, as someone who belongs to the same faith tradition as Gregg... |

I'm hoping it wasn't anything too naughty. I'd rather all the hypocrites were fundy nutjobs, just for consistency's sake.

6. He knew that before and he knows his days as a Senator are numbered |
|
Also the corporate types that usually offer directorships for ex Senators are for the stimulus.
I think it is more likely that some Republicans who knew what would get him trapped in the vetting told him that they would leak it.

7. I think when he was pressured before it was because a Dem. governor had the power to put a Dem. |
|
in his place, but when he got the assurance that he'd replace him with a Repub., it was ok. I keep hearing reporters say there was a big campaign by RWers to get him to withdraw his name after the census job was taken away from him.

For thirty years, the toothless NH press has given him a free ride. The national press and the blogosphere wasn't going to be as deferential as the Union Leader and WMUR.
