Tribune's Zuckman to join Obama administration
February 15, 2009 12:30 PM | No Comments

Jill Zuckman, a Chicago Tribune Washington correspondent and frequent guest on political talk shows such as MSNBC's "Hardball" and Fox Broadcasting's "Fox News Sunday," is leaving to join President Barack Obama's administration in the Department of Transportation.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a Peoria Republican and former seven-term member of the U.S. House, has picked Zuckman to serve as assistant to the secretary and director of public affairs.

"I'm so excited about this. I think this is going to be really fun," Zuckman said by phone Sunday. "I'm excited about going to a department in the administration that's going to play a huge role in hopefully putting people back to work. There is so much money for transportation projects around the country, and I hope that that helps to stimulate the economy to get the country moving again."

Zuckman is the second Tribune Co. reporter in the nation's capital to accept a position with the new administration this month. Cissy Baker, vice president in charge of Tribune Co.'s recently unified Washington News Bureau, on Feb. 7 informed staff that Peter Gosselin, who previously had reported for the Los Angeles Times, accepted a job as chief speech writer for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

2. Interesting....
The other evening she was a guest on Hardball and although Tweety was sort of hammering away against the administration on a point, she was hanging in there telling him to "just wait and see".

I noted to myself how well she seemed to be in Obama's corner. Now I wish I could remember the exact date this happened.

Anyhow, good for her! They grabbed a good voice in her.

8. Peter Gosselin was the other person who joined the administration
Cissy Baker, who is the vice president of the the Tribune's Washington bureau, just announced it. Considering she is Howard Baker's daughter, it is a good thing she is not in the administration.

5. That speaks positively that people who have been following Obama the closest want to work
in his administration. Being a Chicago reporter, she'd know all the dirt on him (or LACK thereof).

7. Exactly...
He seems to have avoided the sleazeball nature of Chicago politics for the most part. That's a rarity given what we've seen with Blago, Bobby Rush, the Daley family, et al.

6. Shes always on Hardball. She never seemed to slant towards Obama
She seemed fair on TV.

9. Fair, and insider negative at times. Given the Trib's lay-offs and ownership problems, good for her.

12. haha
I remember Meghan McCain saying in an interview "The media was sooooo biased for Barack Obama. The White House correspondent of Time Magazine joined the Obama administration, so that proves it!" Well, I remember reading on Politico that McCain advisors named Jill Zuckman as one of the few reporters who they thought were "fair"....and look Meghan, even SHE joined the administration. Guess your theory is shot to shit.
