My "In the Tank" LTTE on Republican media domination is printed
IN THE TANK

During the eight years of the Bush presidency, the facts showed that Republican guests dominated the airwaves on the influential television news shows. Republicans were also far more likely to be on by themselves with no opposing view to rebut them. The excuse the media gave to us was that Republicans were the party in power, so naturally deserved to dominate the airwaves. Oddly, when Bill Clinton was president, Republicans also had a numerical advantage on the TV news. The excuse the media gave then was that Republicans controlled Congress. Now, in the first month of the Obama presidency, Republican guests have still had an overwhelming advantage on TV news shows, despite being a small minority in Congress and having lost the presidency. However, they still rule the airwaves, it seems. The only explanation left now is that the media is in the tank for the Republican Party.

1. The fascists didn't buy control of broadcast media in the 80s and 90s to tell public the truth
did they?

5. Not many republicans left yet their message is the the message of choice for the media.
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 08:26 AM by dcindian
There are several narratives the media follows in their effort to control us. The Christian narrative and the conservative narrative are two of the most annoying.

The media especially the so called news media are used to control a population in this country as many others. I often find myself wondering how many republicans would we have in office if it were not for the media's overwhelming support of their positions. They do so with out the overt cheer leading that Faux news does but they do it with a much more underhanded slant. An overwhelming slant on the number of rightist guest, Use of trigger words to suggest liberal ideals are

Faux news is just another play in the overall scheme used to legitimize the already rightist slant of main stream media. It also pushes the so called media claimed center to the right even more by redefining the rightist controlled message of the media as far left. None of this is new and has been used successfully to dictate public opinion from the inception of this country.

One of the things in the past which show the use of media to sway public opinion is when the media was used to help destroy unions.

Ever see printed : Unions demand : Companies offer?
How many times do you see a christian's religion a main part of the article when a crime is committed compared to say muslim?
How about god saved my _____? What about the other religions ever see them interviewed after a disaster?
Eco terrorist for spray painting a car while a bomb at a womens clinic is never describe as a terrorist.

Our democracy has been really dishearteningly distorted by the use of these means even to the point where we see a two party system as a democracy.

8. good point
How often do we hear about the all too frequent women's health clinic bombings? Yet, a spray painted car or some stunt by PETA is headline news.

13. Thanks for the compliments
I'll see what I can do on sending it to larger outlets.

I might be able to expand it as well, and will need to source it to Media Matters.

14. Great Letter....
I have stopped watching for the most part. They have 24 hours on fox. All morning and part of the afternoon on MSNBC. CNN sucks for the most part and having lou dobbs on pretty much makes me hate the network. They are definitely in the tank for the republican party.

17. It certainly seems that way
and, with their message discipline (i.e., their ability to repeat the same talking points) - it is really quite a platform they have.

20. I believe this morning on ABC, they had Rove on,
but I didn't stay and watch it.

The ratio of Republicans on the air compared to Democrats, economists or scientists is ridiculous.

25. True . . .
but only if citizens watch them ---

After the take overs in the last round, for instance, CNN/Ted Turner had 13 million

international viewers. It dropped to 3 million.

I haven't seen anything lately on these statistics -- but I think things are still

worse cause advertisers have dropped out.

As I understand it, Fox News also had a big drop.

I think MSNBC made the switch with Olbermann because they primarily think about who

will next be buttering their military bread. They could see change coming and wanted

to be on the right side of it.

I've never watched the Sunday talk shows - you could read two books on Sunday by the

time you watched them!

Reading is faster --- TV is being spoon fed.
