MSNBC just reported that Obama will let the caskets of soldiers killed in Iraq & Afghanistan be seen |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 04:18 PM by jenmito
I don't have a link. Jim Miklaszewski just reported that. "Now it appears that President Obama is willing to do that-to allow the American people to support and grieve for their fallen." That's how it SHOULD be!

1. I understand honorable intentions here, but I think the decision should be voted on by those... |
|
who've had relatives killed or injured in Iraq/Afghanistan.
I don't think the policy should be decided by the Pentagon or Obama.

10. If so, then it's not fair to give those families more clout in the decision... |
|
because they won the presidential phone call lottery.
My instincts are to permit it, but as I haven't got a relative even serving over there, it's not my issue or my call.
At Bethesda Naval I've met families with different views on this. Often different within families.
The military knows whose kin have been killed. Give a vote to every family, not just those who speak the loudest on the issue.

|
Or, they can stop saying that their relative died for his or her country. If you die for your country, then your death is the country's. It is a PUBLIC event and no longer the province of mere family (i.e., PRIVATE) concerns.

Wow! That was a BRILLIANT insight!
Pul-eeze! The few (I'm sure) families that don't want it shouldn't have let their family members join up then. I think those that DIED in the service of their country would want it.
What a bunch of mamby-pamby hand wringing. Jesus! Don't you have something else to worry about? Like a leaky faucet or whether we're being nice enough to Repugs? After all, it's Repugs who put the bogus meme out there the ban was all in "respect of military families". No one ever thought such nonsense before the Repugs put that false excuse out there.
One thing's for sure, NOT showing the true cost of these invasions has helped perpetuate them. Got it, Einstein?

While the families have a stake, the minute one puts on the uniform, one is serving THE COUNTRY. As such, the deaths are public events with public consequences. They are no longer merely a matter of PRIVATE family grieving. You can't on the one hand constantly state that your actions are public, then on the other take back those actions for private purposes. It is either one or the other. If somebody died for their country (i.e., in a public capacity), then the death is common property of the public. You can't have it both ways.

Who gets to vote? Just the families? Does that also include siblings or just parents? Do aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. also get a vote? What about boyfriends/girlfriends of the fallen? Do they get a say? What about close friends? Some people are closer to their friends than their immediate family.
What about those who are killed after this proposed vote takes place? They don't get a vote?

38. Photos of coffins returning to the US helped turn the public against the Vietnam War... |
|
That is exactly why the Pentagon wanted the practice banned, and exactly why Rumsfeld wanted it secret.
This is excellent news, and the idea of making families of the fallen "vote" on having photos of anonymous flag-draped coffins it is a straw man -- as well as demeaning and cruel.
Kudos to Obama. President Obama.

40. That had an impact. But I think it was mainly the TV shots of the actual war in Vietnam. |
|
It wasn't seeing the coffins. It was more seeing the actions beforehand that got the guys killed, and the bodies laying on the ground, blown apart and such.
It was the first war where the actual battles were televised.
But I think the coffins DO remind everyone of the cost, and that's what the W.H. was obviously worried about. But I think, like many here on DU, that it's more of an honor to the fallen heroes, to view the coffins, think a minute about the lives they gave up and the cost to their families, and to sympathize.
It's about time.

Good god, if a family member objects to their loved ones casket being filmed, make it possible for them to be unloaded in private. Let's try to work together here. Americans want the chance to honor those who have given all for this life we have. If family members feel differently make a path for them to follow so that they can have their wishes granted. People need to see how many are dying in these wars.
