1. CBO projections up to 2019 show us running a deficit greater than 1% for nine years

with a growing national debt through 2018 and unemployment hitting 9 % next year before the economy swings around.

That was before ARRA or TARP2 or a bunch of other stuff.
Also, that assumes that medicare/medicaid will grow to 12% of GDP.

4. President Obama, during the last debate with McCain said that realistically it would take about

8 to 10 years to pay off the federal deficit and bring things back to break-even.

That's if everything worked out well. If not, and there were some setbacks, we could be looking at 12 to 15 years.

5. It will never happen.

How can it? The only way it could happen is for significant inflation and devaluation of the dollar to make it possible to pay back the deficit with very cheap dollars. Even then, there's so much national debt that garnering the revenues necessary to retire it is an unlikely task.

7. The Historical Record? By keeping the GOP out of the White House.

Reagan/Bush/Bush were the deficit champs. Even an amateur like GWB had no difficulty doubling the National Debt.
