Some more cartoons from the Stimulus/Chimp cartoonist.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 11:49 AM by Occam Bandage

It seems the dude's deal is:

1. Look at the most bizarre news story on the front page.
2. Tie it somehow to the stimulus package.
3. Congratulate yourself on your cutting-edge humor.

This is not to say that the chimp cartoon does not stir up racial flames, because it clearly does. It is, rather, to say that the cartoonist is a pedestrian right-wing hack who's so engrossed with his one trick that he stumbled into a hornet's nest. I think he saw the chimp story, then decided to write the above cartoon without first thinking, hey, the stimulus bill was first proposed by a black guy, I wonder if maybe I shouldn't say that an ape wrote it. I don't agree with Rev. Sharpton that the cartoon is racist in intent, but it has unarguably (and sensibly) been received as racist, and for that the paper should apologize.

3. The same defect that leads to conservatism destroys humor as well as compassion.
I believe that true humor requires an understanding of your subject (Colbert is funny for this reason). Republicans are unable to empathize, and so they are unable to do anything but bully and mock. Neither are funny.

4. It's the Post, I expect nothing more from them.
Typical and right along their lines. Plus, they get away with their blatant racism because it's always borderline and there's freedom of speech to consider. The more we HATE the more publicity they get.

5. And all the cartoons use images associated with particular issues or groups
In this country, everyone knows that chimpanzees and apes have been used at times to denigrate Blacks, so I have no doubt that the artist knew what he was doing and his intent was clear.

6. I have no doubt that the racial stereotype should have been apparent.
I do, however, doubt that it was apparent. Perhaps I give him too little credit, but looking at the other cartoons I really think he's dumb enough to use an ape in a cartoon about Obama's policy without thinking someone might see it as a link to Obama.

Nice catch. And fwiw, I completely agree with you.

Just not familiar with the guys work.

25. Yes. They've been dropping hints in the work as to the fictional artist's character;
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 01:38 PM by Occam Bandage
he's an old racist alcoholic whose children hate him, who knows nothing of politics or pop culture, and who's trapped in a loveless marriage. My favorite comics are not the ones where they openly mock freeper thought, but rather the ones in which the joke is that the artist has unwittingly revealed more about himself than he might have wished to.

(This is my favorite one ever, from his proud (and misspelled) use of the "beechwood aged" advertising gimmick, to the mishmash of outfits and cultural markers, to the ignorant reversal of common wisdom about beer quality)

30. Well, just the fact that he reads the Onion may be a sign he isn't the worst...
FWIW, "Homies" sold like hotcakes in San Francisco. Back in the early 00's, you could find several "Homies" vending machines in the heavily hispanic, Mission District.

But I'll take your word for it that he's an asshat.

31. I don't think he actually reads it so much as someone gave him the cartoon.
I never see it lying around his desk like mine always does.

Then again, I didn't look to close.

As for the "Homies"...I think he collected them out of less than cute reasons.

14. I agree with the OP, i don't think he meant it to be all out racist, it was mainly poor judgment
Though i wouldn't rule it out that he had a little racist twinge in the back of his mind while drawing this. secretly he had to have made the connection of the racist stereotype, but probably pushed it out of his mind because he didn't want to give up, what he thought to be, a "clever" cartoon idea.

20. The Post has already issued not an apology, but rather a defense,
saying it's obviously not racist and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong. I'm disappointed but not surprised; I was at least hoping for a "that's not what we meant and we're sorry we left it open to that interpretation" clarification/apology.

22. When you went to look for the artists material...
Did you somehow miss his blatantly homophobic work:

http://www.glaad.org/action/write_now_detail.php?id=3924

Or his clear lack of talent:

http://dailycartoonist.com/index.php/2008/06/17/sean-delonas-catches-flack-for-duplicating-self/

Because both are apparent with a simple googling.

23. Yes, I did. I went to the Post's web page,
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 01:28 PM by Occam Bandage
then looked back up until Obama's inauguration. I found multiple hacky references to fluff news stories from Phelps to Octomom, with his politics-oriented comics being the the same as his fluff-oriented comics with "Stimulus" or "Bernie Madoff" thrown in. I did not go back in the archives through 2006; I believed I had found a trend going back in the past month and stopped.

The first pair of comics you have linked to are despicable and should have been cause enough to fire him. The second pair are obvious examples of lazy hackery, but I would think that was apparent to anyone who read any of his stuff.
