5. Call and complain.
I've been doing it since the primaries and haven't stopped just because Obama got elected president.

13. So do chimpanzees....

Might the cartoonist have been using that day's headline as a commentary, without thinking of alternative interpretations:

Chimp shot dead after mauling woman

A 200-pound domesticated chimpanzee which once starred in TV commercials has been shot dead by police after a violent rampage that left a friend of its owner badly mauled.

<...>

An officer shot Travis several times after the animal opened the door to his cruiser and started to get in.

"The animal had cornered him," said Cpt Conklin. "He had no other recourse."

26. Then he is still insensitive and tasteless.
A magnificent animal was killed due to human error and a woman horribly injured because a wild animal wasn't treated like a wild animal.

He's played with people's sensitivities before and has caught flack because of it, he knew what he was doing. And if the cartoonist himself didn't have an idea of how the toon could be seen, then the editors of the NY Post should have had enough decency to scrub it.

But like others have said, it IS the NY Post.

32. Literally? Nothing

It's the New York Post. The chimp was shot in Connecticut. The cartoonist appears to have been using the chimp shooting to make a criticism of the stimulus bill - i.e. as if it had been written by the chimp that was shot.

Mixing together two news stories to make a comment is something cartoonists often do. In this instance, the resulting cartoon conveys an image that appears to be blatantly racist.

25. NY Post (but you probably knew that)
If I had a number for Mr. Sean, I'd have posted that too then I would have HAD to mention who would be on the other end.

:hi: and apologies.

19. But thats the thing.
I didnt automatically assume the cartoon was racist - as I've said in another thread - we have a saying "a monkey could do it" + a chimp in the news. I never equated the chimp with Obama. So, I didnt see the sign and assume its presence indicated racism either.

Of course, I'll be ridiculed for that. For seeing a chimp and not assuming it = Obama. Thats pretty fucked up, imho.

9. ------>Chimp shot dead after mauling woman

This seems to be a reference to the chimpanzee shooting in the news

The cartoonist appears to have used the recent incident in which cops shot a chimpanzee, as a commentary on the stimulus bill.

The cartoon may be due to a lack of thoughtfulness on what the image might convey, if the cartoonist was thinking about the chimpanzee shooting.

Nothing. It is a racist cartoon aimed at our president.

I agree that it appears to be a racist cartoon.

I believe there may have been an intent to criticize the stimulus bill, as having been the product of inferior intelligence.

I do not agree that the intent was necessarily racist, as the creator of a work often cannot view it objectively to determine what other intent there may be.

In other words the point of the cartoon is the answer to your question "what does the killed chimp have to do with the author of the stimulus bill". The cartoonist appears to be suggesting that specific chimpanzee was its author, as a criticism of the stimulus bill.

The cartoonist is an idiot for not taking a second look at it, though.

18. Your question?
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 01:42 PM by jberryhill
The cartoon shows a marked police car, an unmarked cruiser, and a telephone pole with a "Beware of Dog Sign"

Note the visual elements here:

That chimp was shot when it tried to enter the car, and was a top story yesterday.

The cartoonist seems to be saying that the stimulus bill is stupid.

The cartoonist obviously does not understand that the reference to the chimp shooting is obscure, and is more likely to be understood as a racist statement that a juxtaposition of two news stories.

The visual reference is to a specific chimpanzee that was shot by police based on the wire service photo.

I (seems I'm not alone) find this particular toon to be low class, insensitive and tasteless.

February is still black history month and it all just seems pretty well, low class, insensitive and tasteless.

Let me go find an iron skin to put on.

ETA: He has a few more as well as some anti-gay toons some other people may find objectionable.

15. regardless of the 'beware of dog' sign...
this 'cartoon' is real subtle, isn't it??

nothing like some racism 'hidden' behind the spin that it involves current event(s) that were 'poorly juxtaposed' or some such shit...

the right wing should be proud of work like this...gives their talking heads something to 'defend and explain'...

IRONY? The irony of a typical beware of dog sign with a crazed chimp running around. The guy wasn't trying to make a statement on the civil rights movement I swear some people are trying way too hard to find a reason to be offended way. If this had been drawn without the context of what happened in CT then I could understand the charges of racism. But light of what happened what happned there is nothing racist about it in fact cartoon is just pretty non scenical
