Michelle Obama delighted a group of Washington sixth- and seventh-graders this afternoon hosting them at a White House concert and introducing them to members of the first family. Treated to a lesson about black history, the students heard about the slaves that built the White House, listened to the black man who runs the staff and met members of the black family that lives there now.

The children were wide-eyed as the first lady told them she and the President were once kids just like them, describing herself and her husband as their neighbors. The concert, held in the White House East Room, featured the group Sweet Honey in the Rock, which sang, among other songs, a spiritual about the civil rights movement.

I'm beginning to think Sasha doesn't go out without a peace sign on her clothes. I love that!

15. I love that too!
They won't do this (and rightfully shouldn't because they are so young :)) but they look like they should be young models. They are so cute. Michelle is so classy and I am sure that having her mother in the WH has helped a lot. :bounce:

.... I'm sure the kids at Sidwell are wonderful, but despite my middle class parents, I grew up around kids from all socio-economic groups and am better for it.

Plus, that kid taking their picture is 10,000 times more adorable than any of them Jonas Brothers are! lol

9. This family melts my heart.
I just finished listening to her talk to the kids. What an utterly lovely, down-to-earth human being. That's what I love about her. She is so sweet, but also strikes me as being a very strong woman. The kind of woman I've always looked up to, and aspired to be. I can't see any other first lady, other than Jackie O doing this kind of thing, and then, she wasn't as accessible to the average person as Michelle is. LOVE this family!

We can't have that! :sarcasm:

16. It charms me to see the way that whole family is always lovin' on each other.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 07:18 PM by tblue37
There's no stiffness or fakery about it. They just really, really love each other. I think it is good for people to see that, since so many families in general are so stressed and so often not as close to or affectionate with each other as they should be or want to be.

Oh, yeah--and I love the way Michelle and Obama are so warm with other people's kids, too. Kids need that love and affirmation, and boy do the Obamas know how to dish it out!
