17. I don't think the purpose of the OP is to excuse him at all.

I think the purpose is to show that the cartoonist is a bigoted creep and always has been. That his stuff is full of racism and homophobia and misogyny, and this latest cartoon is part of it. I think it goes to a long way to proving the cartoonist does NOT deserve the benefit of the doubt.

And he is warped with a near evil attitude towards a variety of his fellow American citizen. People of color, of alternate lifestyles, of liberal/progressive persuasions seem to have been his targets for many years. I don't live anywhere near N. Y. City, but I guess I could look at the Post online. I would not waste a fart on that rag. mr. murdoch has taken great pains to produce a product that is designed to appeal to the lowest of character. His cartoonist is a tool of ignorance. Both the cartoonist and the editor who ok'd the awful image of a dead chimp, along with the patently racist comment, should pack their bags, and head out of town. On a rail. They are despicable characters, and guess what? It doesn't surprise me one bit. What good has mr. murdoch brought to media? I can't find a single thing that he's touched that hasn't caused misery, despair or hate. Each one of these dark dark dark souls have earned their legacies.

I encourage the continued protests against the post. I would extend it right to the top. I refuse to read anything from the W. S. J., watch anything on faux snooze, and I can't even watch The Simpsons without feeling that I'm dipping my mind into a sewer.
