Not because of a controversial cartoonist .. but because of what total dirtbags Murdoch and crew are.

New York Post gets down in the dumps. Thousands of papers go from presses to the trash

Friday, March 31st 2006, 12:00 AM

TENS OF THOUSANDS of New York Posts were dumped at two recycling centers yesterday morning, just hours after being printed, in a bizarre circulation ploy that has already come to the attention of newspaper circulation authorities. An executive at a Brooklyn facility where at least 10,000 Posts were dumped said the papers would be sent to China, still wrapped in their original plastic binders. Four vanloads of bundled Posts were unceremoniously thrown into the recycling plant in the Gowanus section at 6:30 a.m. without any attempt ever having been made to distribute them.

Several hours later, a large Penske truck containing another 10,000 still-bundled Posts was unloaded at a recycling center in Greenpoint. The decision to dump the Posts en masse is even more puzzling as the papers had been sponsored by Nike and Jordan Brand, and were originally destined to be given away to consumers in the city. It was unclear last night how much Nike had been asked to pay for the specially printed newspapers, which the Post is understood to be claiming as paid-for circulation. Calls to the Post's publisher, editor in chief and vice president of circulation were not returned. "The New York Post will have no comment," said spokesman Howard Rubenstein. Calls to Nike officials were not returned.

Dumping newspapers to try and increase circulation numbers!?!

Murdoch was caught in this ploy.. and looking at the DU thread, he was also caught in Australia trying to do the same thing.. I still maintain the hunch I had on that '06 thread. I'll bet anything that Faux News ratings are BOUGHT AND PAID FOR, they just haven't been caught yet.

Not sure why this incident popped into my head, but it only took a couple seconds to find that old thread.. -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2200400

1. interesting
And that reminds me of how Regnery and similar publishing houses boost their releases up the best-sellers lists by "selling" boatloads of copies to conservative think-tanks, and such. Conservatism is such a sham, a criminal enterprise from top to bottom.

4. The Post dumps/gives away about 90% of its print run on any average day anyway.
Spend a day in New York and you know it. The newspaper sellers are only "selling" the Post during morning rush hour. The rest of the day they're standing there, giving it away, trying to force free copies into the hands of passersby like it's a store sales flyer. Whatever they can't give away sits in stacks afterwards, rotting away.

When you think about it, it's surprising more people don't pick up the copies thrust upon them. I mean, for cleaning up after walking the dog, or lining the catbox or the birdcage, you can't beat free material.

6. When it comes to fudging circulation numbers..
.
.

Doesn't it seem like printing thousands and thousands of papers just to dump them is pretty extreme?

They couldn't come up with an easier way to fudge their numbers?

5. They probably do something similar with right-wing books
Buy them up in bulk themselves and get rid of them to show an increase the number of books sold.

7. Half of FAUX New ratings are DUers.

I block the f'ing channel myself. I bet the cable companies track trends in channel blocking and would love to see everyone blocking FNC. What company would want to carry a channel nobody is watching?
