No, I'm NOT Kidding, "Steele: GOP needs 'hip-hop' makeover."
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 10:09 AM by Clio the Leo
Remember all those jokes we've been making for the last few weeks about Steele and his "funky fress ill" command of the English language? As if he'd been transported from the 1980s' set of "YO! MTV Raps!"

Well, turns out we weren't too far off...

Steele: GOP needs 'hip-hop' makeover
Ralph Z. Hallow

Newly elected Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele plans an “off the hook” public relations offensive to attract younger voters, especially blacks and Hispanics, by applying the party's principles to “urban-suburban hip-hop settings.”

The RNC's first black chairman will “surprise everyone” when updating the party's image using the Internet and advertisements on radio, on television and in print, he told The Washington Times.

Having been elected to the job that the Bush White House and its political guru, Karl Rove, once denied him, Mr. Steele is running the show his way. To those who claimed he can't make the trains run on time, he has this message: “Stuff it.”

He stiff-armed an attempt to get him to elaborate on his public relations effort, saying he would be an idiot .... <snip>

Hey, you said it Michael! :)

”There was underlying concerns we had become too regionalized and the party needed to reach beyond our comfort” zones, he said, citing defeats in such states as Virginia and North Carolina. “We need messengers to really capture that region - young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings.”

But, he elaborated with a laugh, “we need to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets.”

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/19/steele-gop-needs-hip-hop-makeover/

And to quote Shenaenae from the old "Martin" show.... OH NO HE DI'UN!!!!! :wtf:
(note to the mods, we need a "two snaps up in a circle with a half twist" smiley please.)

Great, now I suddenly have the image of fat, middle aged white women with helment hair dressed as the Fly Girls dancing at the next RNC convention to the tune of "Whoop there it is."

Does he realize that is considered a slur? Calling someone a midget is akin to using the n-word. He is painfully out of touch.

A friend of mine who's a Republican is all excited about Steele ..... when I told her that all my Democratic buddies were too .... well, she didn't know what to say.

We need to put this man in prime time! Who do I call to get him on Larry King and the View! He'll do more for us than even Rush can! lol

4. Steele is operating under the misguided notion
that you can turn the gop on a dime. Doesn't work like that. Things will have to get much worse for them before they even hope to get better, and that's only if they make some fundamental changes, one being to kick out the conservative fundies.

We use the term in technology all the time. I would consider that many Microsoft products have been released while on the 'bleeding edge'. ;)

24. I don't find this funny but
cynical to the core, this is what the GOP is all about which is to
mislead people into thinking that they care when their apparent
motives are to enrich the rich.

The bottomline is...Republicans/Conservative can never become a
socialist and a Democrats cannot become Conservative despite what
narratives talking heads might try to use.

The internet was not form to make money, it was formed by folks who
wanted to find a quicker and faster way to get in touch with people
from other parts of the world (amazing how we quickly forget) until
the Republicans came on board and see it as a money making entity,
now some of them are even complaining about their right to a photo at
facebook when no one asked them to join in the first place.

It's the same here on DU, a Republican will become a member seeing it
as trying to understand our community and when their views are jumped
on they becomes pissy and asked for their money back, and will start
searching all the Law books for Laws that support their pissy behaviors.

So all this attempt by Steele is just a waste of time because he is trying
to do something these people never believe in, which is the COMMUNITY,
if he thinks that, by getting hip-hop heritage into the Republican movement
will help change their views toward communities(??) then he must not have been
paying attention and is even solidifying the knowledge that republicans are
completely out of touch with their own thinking (which is not unusual)by
buying black votes and pretending to care about blacks.....
THIS FROM THE SAME GROUP OF PEOPLE WHOM DOESN'T
SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS IMAGE AND ARE DEFENDING IT

he must be of the perception that AFRICAN AMERICANS are STUPID....

GOODLUCK!!!

66. Freeper heads are exploding all over the place
the last thing they want is a bigger tent. Heck, many of them are pissed off the party has a black man at the helm now and have said so in no uncertain terms. They just want to keep their current coalition of fundamentalists, supply siders and neocons. Expand the party, hell no, they just want to find the next issue that they can use to scare some of the moderates and independents to come back their way.

68. So Steele's thinking is that the GOP will get more vote by appealing to the urban culture? Pathetic.

How insulting that a party who made up of primarily of white christian old stick up their ass fogeys is going to suddenly embrace hip hop. We all know that the hip hop culture is not one that any of them can stomach, yet they are gonna try and fake their way through and once again hope we buy it and come running...i get so pissed at how stupid and gullible they constantly think we all are.

Why is it so DAMN hard for the GOP to just understand the simple F'in fact that their party doesn't need all that stupid window dressing, it doesn't need "token" minorities front and center and it doesn't need gimmicks to win an election. They want to change and actually get votes...then they need let go of the bibles, start telling the truth, stop discriminating against the gays and pro-choicer and run honest and clean campaigns.

These people are such idiots and they will never get it!!! I'm sure there are many people who are fiscally conservative but don't subscribe to all the rest of the social Bullshit that the GOP pulls. If they dropped the hate mongering and the insistence that we all be Christian soldiers and live like them, then i bet they would actually get a wider pool of votes, running on just their "small government, guns, Tax cuts, less spending and whatever else that doesn't have to do with religion. That would be real change, but they wont, they can't actually change, they will continue to keep putting lipstick on a pig and hoping america is stupid enough to kiss it.

I hope Steele continues on this path and gives people like John Stewart and Bill Maher some really great material.

69. He has stapled himself to this "urban persona" and pushes it any chance he can.
Bill Bennett (the "abort black babies" one) has a morning talk radio show and Steele fills in for him quite a bit. Steele goes so far over the top with his "I'm from the younger generation and this aint your father's republican party" affections that it will make you cringe with embarrassment. I can't quote him exactly, but to paraphrase it goes like "Waddup waddup, this is Micheal Steele yo, in the house here filling in for Bill Bennett. I want to give a shout out to everyone listening this morning, it's time to get this party started right! You are in the place to be here on Bennett Mornings" - but he says it in his usual voice, enunciating each word to it's full extent e.g. not dropping g's from the ends of words. It's like he has a ROT13-style substitution list of "hip" phrases and "happening" one-liners that he thinks kids, specifically "black kids" I guess, use.

73. The party of old, aging white guys is going to suddenly become the big tent party
when the President is a Democrat and a young (relatively) black guy?

Excuse me, I think I'm going to go laugh my spleen out.

76. This from the black guy who lost the black vote in Maryland's senate race...
...to a little bald Jewish guy (Ben Carden), who doesn't exactly appear to have ever had a hip hop makeover.
