My idea for the ultimate revenge on the Republican idolization scheme of the 1990s
We saw my childhood Washington National Airport renamed "Ronald Reagan National Airport,"
a special irony, as Reagan never liked Washington to begin with. Then the most inappropriately
named "George Bush Center for Intelligence." Not to mention the President George H.W. Bush
Highway--in DALLAS, of all places! Bush made Houston his home, and rarely came up to Dallas.
Worse yet, his unwanted son intends to settle in Dallas--reason enough to charge him with
being an enemy (domestic).

Sooooooo, obviously we'd be called petty, vindictive, unpatriotic, whatever, if we
rescinded those offensive measures. However, since the Republicans unofficially made it
suddenly OK to name stuff after individuals while they were still living, I now propose
that we make Los Angeles International Airport the William Jefferson Clinton International
Airport, and rename Newark, NJ's Liberty International Airport the Governor Howard Dean
International Airport.

They'd scream bloody murder. I say, bring 'em on.

1. I have a better idea
The Jimmy Carter...well, anything. Part of the mythology of St. Ronnie is that he delivered us from darkness, personified by Carter, so to see Carter rehabilitated in this way would be an even bigger slap in the face.

2. Well, the Hartsfield airport in Atlanta has had the name for quite a while now
Carter's name would honor that Airport quite nicely--it is also the most active
airport in North America. I'm sure that would make the radical right howl as well.

I say hit 'em with as many as we can come up with. Bisect some Republican
district of New York, say where Peter King is their Rep. with the Al Sharpton
Memorial Highway.

5. That would be fine, but...
If draft dodger John Wayne has an airport in SoCal, why the hell shouldn't JIMMY STEWART?!?
In addition to being a superb actor, Stewart flew over 20 missions over Germany in B-24s and B-17s during WWII - far from easy duty - and picked up a Distinguished Flying Cross with cluster for his trouble!
Laet's name a major airport after Stewart, fer Gossakes!

6. We're trying to get an airport named after a liberal.

But I wonder why, say, Pittsburgh's airport isn't named for him.

7. Pittsburgh would be fine...
I don't much care what Stewart's politics were - it just galls me that John Wayne, who ACTED like a hero, gets an airport while Stewart, who WAS one, doesn't.
But I see your larger point - and we're in agreement.

8. Wayne actually grew up in the area of the airport. But, RR's name on National really has me pissed.
It's called "Reagan NAP" here in DC.
