APNewsBreak: Black pastors to ask Burris to resign
APNewsBreak: Black pastors in Chicago want to meet with Sen. Burris, seek his resignation

TAMMY WEBBER
AP News

Feb 19, 2009 16:56 EST

A Chicago minister tells The Associated Press he and other black pastors who previously supported U.S. Sen. Roland Burris now plan to ask him to resign. The minister spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because a meeting with Burris hadn't yet been scheduled. He says the senator can no longer serve effectively.

Many of the city's black pastors supported seating Burris because of his scandal-free reputation — even though he was appointed by then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich after the governor was arrested.

But revelations that Burris attempted to raise money for Blagojevich while seeking the Senate job have eroded some of his support. Blagojevich is accused of trying to sell the Senate appointment.

A Burris spokeswoman didn't immediately return a phone message.

1. Ugh. Are we EVER going to get a Senator from Illinois and from Minnesota seated?
Ever?

6. As long as Minnesota is vacant, there's no rush on Illinois
With both seats vacant the threshold for cloture is lowered to 59. So until we get Franken seated having a vacant seat in Illinois won't make it any harder to get legislation through. Of course, the people of those states are probably not served as well because they only have 1 senator to secure appropriations for them and handle casework, but from the perspective of getting enough votes to pass the president's agenda having a vacant seat in Illinois wouldn't make a difference.

2. I'm sure it didn't help either that his bumbling ass was iffy on the
free choice act. I can't look for a link right now but I saw a story on it yesterday. He needs to go.

3. Burris Resignation Watch On! How long does he have?
Under two weeks, IMO.

5. I don't either. I wish there could have been a special election
after the mess started. I never had high hopes for Burris. He was way too eager for that seat and there is a reason he had never won state wide elections in the past. What a fuck up!
