Obama Reverses U.S. Position on LGBT Issues at the U.N.
At the so-called "Durban Review Conference" on racism and xenophonia underway in Geneva, Europe again put forward language condemning “all forms of discrimination and all other human rights violations based on sexual orientation.” According to UN Watch, "The Czech Republic on behalf of the E.U., with the support of New Zealand, the United States, Colombia, Chili on behalf of the South American states, the Netherlands, Argentina and a few others, took the floor in support."

25. South Africa's post-apartheid constitution was the first in the world
to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, and on 1 December 2006 South Africa made history by becoming the fifth country in the world and first in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage. One year later an equal age of consent was achieved; after long and lengthy debate and a complete overhaul of sexual offences legislation, consent was gender-neutralized at 16.

24. I don't mean to poke a stick at you Bluebear because I will surely loose.
I too am surprised that there are not 250 posts on this. It is a victory and should be celebrated. Let me put it another way. Let's say that we women got together and really followed the many times society discriminated against us. Each time our candidate appeared to slight us we joined in mass to voice our outrage. And then one happy day, our candidate takes a stand for women around the world and we fail to show up to applaud. I would admonish the women for not recognizing that indeed their candidate had not failed them. It's an honest observation not a phobia. Peace, Kim

I for one am celebrating another example of Mr Obama being true to his word, and doing the right thing.

It seems he's doing as much as he can do, as quickly as possible.

He did take a stand for women too, as we know. Very beautiful and very appreciated.

It is good to let go of hostility when you see the right thing's been done.

27. Not at all...I posted how glad I was to read this downthread...
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 12:51 AM by Bluebear
...then reading upthread, I was sad to see somebody have to make snarky remarks about the LGBT community and how we weren't commenting on this thread like we should. :(

I think one reason might be because so many of us rarely check the GDP forum anymore. Anyhow, I made my happy post first, then took the 'honest observation' as people taking yet another opportunity to throw barbs, rightly or wrongly, and I just wish it would stop. if that makes any sense :)

More importantly, though, I am glad for this post and for the decision made. Bravo to Obama!

get online! Seriously, WTF!???? People hammering the GLBTers of DU for not commenting on it BEFORE they stepped foot in the thread to see we all haven't commented is really annoying... There's no need for that stupid comment of theirs, and its a common-assed statement some make on here "there's not enough comments about this", I get sick of hearing that bullshit!

We're fucking STOKED about this, let me show them how much (I have to overdo it or I'll be accused of not being bouncy enough as a greatful homo)

news. And there's only so many of us gay people, you should know that - and anyhow, most of the recs are probably from non-gay people. God bless them. But, go back to your totally agreeing that there's not parades in the threads about this news. Seriously, this person posted that comment long before most could have seen this news - so stupid to state anything about being shocked there's not more talk!

Reversing American's stance here is the first truly concrete pro-gay thing he's done. The call-outs in speeches and a few minor appointments could be dismissed as window dressing.

42. or maybe...
Maybe people are aware of the ugly and hostile little core underneath the "happy happy" surface? I was about to say good things, but then I see from your post that to do so would be to side with those who want to attack and malign and insult people, and merely use the President to advance that divisive agenda.

Is that what "supporting" Obama means? Being able to bash and attack those with whom you diuagree? count me out, That is a shame, because if you and others are able to successful define "support" for the President in this narrow and ugly way, that can only be very destructive to the future success of the administration.

You just contradicted and invalidated and soiled any good feelings or hope or happiness about this, by using it as an opportunity to take a hateful swipe at the GLBTQ community and their supporters.

This is the ugly side, the destructive and negative side, to the demands for "loyalty" to the President which are supposedly all happy and hopeful and positive. This is not what it appears to be.

It feels like the muscles in my back are unknotting. I read this and let out a sigh of relief like I'd just had a good massage or something. Eight years of being ashamed of my country, and it's being rectified in eight weeks. I'd even forgotten some of the reasons for the shame, but the tension was still there.

Maybe we have a chance of being the best in human rights again, at some point in the future.
