50. LOL, I guess they don't care about being as culturally 'in' as dinosaurs
Just reading some of the replies there shows exactly why the GOP has burned it's bridges with the youth vote so badly.

One thing so consistent in the replies is people there saying they don't want to abandon conservative policies to try to remake the party, but that just shows how out of touch they really are to what the GOP's problems is. I mean look at the groups the GOP is doing the worst with/has rapidly lost ground with in recent years.

-Blacks
-Hispanics
-Young people
-Gays
-Muslims

Notice anything in common with all of these groups? The answer, they're all groups that the GOP has thrown under the bus, either for political reasons (from seeing something to gain at the time by doing it), or just because their base demanded they do it.

Blacks republicans screwed up on decades ago, republicans were the party of Lincoln, yet the GOP abandoned them in favor of a 'southern strategy'. At the time that may have helped them win elections more easily, but in the long run look at what they gave the democrats, African Americans are the most likely racial group to vote straight ticket democrat, they do so by a higher rate then any other race votes straight ticket for either party.

Muslims are a group that you'd think would be with the GOP from their social conservative agenda, and they were with the GOP in 2000. But then after 9/11 the GOP started to use hatred of Muslims for political gains, and abandoned Muslim Americans when they needed them most, so they abandoned the GOP. The GOP's attacks using fear and discrimination against Muslims was even visible in 2008, by calling Obama a Muslim, as if they were something horrible, when in fact only a small few are the radical terrorists. The democrats barely had to do anything at all to get the Muslim American vote. Of course there's very few Muslim Americans, so this didn't hurt the GOP that much.

Hispanics are another voting block the GOP had been making gains with, but then they burned it all away for nothing, and this one is especially painful considering how rapidly the Hispanic population is growing in America (IE, this one will hurt the GOP even more overtime if they don't fix things now). When it came to immigration reform the hardcore GOP base started to ranting against illegal immigrants (most of which were Hispanic) in such ways that their attacks even sounded racist at times. Hispanics weren't deaf to this. By caving into the hardcore GOP base the GOP has undone all the hard work Bush did with getting the Hispanic vote, and put themselves in an even worse position then they started in.

Gays are another group the GOP is doing horribly with. Is it any wonder that democrats win the gay vote by a 3 to 1 margin when your party drags gays through the dirt, telling people how horrible they are, and how gay marriage would ruin everything! In 2004 the GOP basically said they don't want the gay vote, heck Bush didn't even want the endorsement of the log cabin republicans, and a bunch of republicans said they weren't real republicans. Can you possibly be more unwelcoming to a certain group by telling them that supporting civil rights legislation to make them equal with everyone else in society makes them 'not real republicans'?

Young people are another group the GOP has burned a lot of bridges with. When you attack pop culture (something young people love) and compare Obama to Britney Spears, you're basically dissing the young generation. With young people the GOP doesn't seem to understand that the reason they're losing them is also because of their policies, that don't appeal to young people. Young people tend to very socially liberal, and over 2/3's of them support gay marriage, so when you're dragging hated minority groups through the dirt to score political points, like gays and Hispanics, don't expect it to work. The young generation is typically the quickest to support civil rights for persecuted minority groups (like African Americans a few decades ago), yet the GOP seems to be delusionally ignoring this fact in this insistence that no change in policy is needed to appeal to the young, just a change in messaging. Also hurting the GOP with the young is Bush and Clinton being freshest in young voters minds. Clinton brought peace and prosperity, Bush brought lots of failures and wars.

The lesson for the GOP? Maybe they should stop throwing persecuted minority groups under the bus whenever it seems like such a good idea in the short term at the time, while ignoring the long term implications. If the GOP wants to actually get competitive with groups like African Americans again then they have to start to go out of their way to do more for them, even if it may be unpopular at the time.

the last thing most of them want is a bigger tent. Heck, many of them are pissed off the party has a black man at the helm now and have said so in no uncertain terms. They just want to keep their current coalition of fundamentalists, supply siders and neocons. Expand the party, hell no, they just want to find the next issue that they can use to scare some of the moderates and independents to come back their way.

He’s correct. The party has remained analogue. Just look at some of the posts on this site. You all have got allot of young, talented, energetic and ethnically diverse people within your party....why I am perpetually seeing old, fat, blue blazered caucasian faces (not that there’s anything wrong with that) is beyond me. Especially at the convention. Figure it out people.
