SC Gov Sanford to"reject federal unemployment cash and funding for green buildings in the stimulus".
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 10:41 PM by Pirate Smile
SC Gov: I'm doing what Congress won't

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who says he'll reject federal unemployment cash and funding for green buildings in the stimulus, is taking a victory lap at the Republican Governor's Association dinner tonight, Politico's Charles Mahtesian reports.

"I think Republican governors are doing what should have been done by the United States Congress," said Sanford, speaking to a crowd that included 16 of 22 GOP governors -- but not ardently pro-stimulus Arnold.

Four of the governors have said they'll reject parts of the stimulus.

Sanford, who is locked in a battle with House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) over the South Carolina cash -- referred to Minority Leader John Boehner as "a hero" for mustering unanimous House opposition to the package.

This asshole is definitely running in 2012. I'd love to see Pres. Obama kick his ass.

I did look for a different source but couldn't find one and figured that Politico is probably a decent source for a RW dinner.

edit to fix idiotic misspelling.

20. They are granstanding because it's so dam easy.
They are tickled pink that the package gives localities the right to bypass the State Governors. They can pretend to be against the money while the mayors go behind their backs and get money for the cities. This is just faux poutrage; that lets them stand in the limelight without having to do a damn thing. If their States further decline; it's Obama's fault. If they recover; they will claim it wasn't because of the stimulus. They will say it was some crazy scam they pulled that saved the State.

It's a win/win for them and they know it.

They have more unemployed and will be happy to take the cash.

Fuck South Carolina. I don't consider that state to be America anyway.

30. Wow... South-bashing on this board. Whodda thunk it?
You do know there are Democrats and Independents in South Carolina, right?

(P.S. Normally, I think your "must support our war president" comments are hilarious, but bashing Southern states is a huge pet peeve of mine).

Maybe that's why the rest of America has stopped buying cars made in Michigan.

They have convinced themselves that this stimulus plan and anything having to do with Obama will Fail or they will make it fail, that come 2012 they are banking on this belief coming true and them picking up the pieces of a broken america....they are severely in for a shock.

8. Sanford thinks he's going to run for president in 2012
He's head of the GOP Gov's association and likes to brag that he's a "fiscal" conservative. It's all part of the GOP's plan to "return to their roots". Of course the fact that he's batshit crazy and dumber than dirt doesn't enter the picture.

24. The people that suffer most from Sanford's policies aren't the ones that voted for him
Well, some of them might be, but many of the unemployed are homeless and find it near-impossible to vote, and most of the others are urban, mostly Democratic voters. I think even rural and poorer suburban whites here are starting to wise up, but that might just be wishful thinking on my part.

12. I think the Repukes have got themselves going after another electorate that doesn't exist
In 2008 they thought they could get 'PUMA' votes by putting a couple of tits on the ticket. Now they're living in another one of Rushbo's drug-induced right wing fantasy lands of anarchists, Libertarians, and Hooverites that gleefully hope for the destruction of our country by standing around and doing nothing about our economic woes.

14 Freepers endlessly quoting each other on messageboards does not an electoral victory make.

14. South Carolina unemployment = 8.4%, the 4th highest in the nation, and one of the fastest growing
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 10:28 AM by ShadowLiberal
You'd think this moron would realize, you know, that his state NEEDS unemployment money.

He claims that he's rejecting that money because in the long run it would cost the state more when funding for it runs out since it would require changing the eligibility for employment insurance. It doesn't seem to have occurred to him that, you know, you could change the unemployment requirements to get unemployment money to get the money, and change them back to what they used to be when funding from the federal government runs out, so that he won't have to *gasp* raise unemployment insurance.

Not that SC can't have it, just the Governor. Obama can use this guy as an example of what will happen if the governors and mayors don't play along.

Because they can accept the money and appropriate it themselves, thanks to Rep. Clyburn.

25. Does SC get more of a return on their dollars, when bigger states get sent back less?
A bigger stimulus would have been good, but also throwing good money after states' bad practices. Might see a better use of stim. now, to be given more and for better use later.

26. The conservative credo writ large: fuck everyone and everything else
The very concept of reducing one's footprint on this world is a horror to them. The very idea of giving a damn about anyone else is an attack on the very soul of their worshiping of the sacred individual. Green is obscene.

I saw a "god hates" list reprinted here recently, and hybrid cars were on the list. What kind of sanctified selfishness is this? They've been trying with all their greedy intolerance to turn us into Fuckyouistan since the 1980 election, and even though it hasn't worked completely, it's so brutally darkened our national character that it's depressing to those of us who remember times before the great ugliness.

27. The Governor won't have to worry about green industries locating in his state,
He single handedly will make sure SC misses the boat on the new green technology and industries that will lift this country out of the recession. Way to go Gov. The voters will turn him out in the next election.
