Sean Penn mentions how this country "has elected an elegant man" with his Oscar win!
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 11:55 PM by zulchzulu
He also mentioned and called out the voters who voted against Prop Hate (8) in a stunning acceptance speech. Pure Sean Penn... and a big Obama supporter! In case you missed it, he played Harvey Milk in the movie MILK.

2. Sean Penn rocked, and I think was shocked. So much the
better! I have so many movies to see.

3. Be ready to cry when you see Milk.
It is tragic, of course... but really inspiring. Penn is amazing as Harvey Milk.

6. My dad saw every movie. "Milk" was the first one on the
movie train, but he saw it. He doesn't particularly like gay or black people, or didn't, but likes good movies. I'm happy and surprised he did, especially when he didn't talk to me for about 7 months because I supported Obama instead of Clinton. Oy! But my dad is coming around!

I think he saw it because of Sean Penn. Mr. Penn does have an influence.

19. I did not see the movie, but
just from seeing the trailer I remember comenting that it must be a great performance. It sounds silly, I know, but it is the first time I had this reaction just from seeing a few short shots. Small nothings, the body language, face expression, very striking.Penn is a great actor, in the De Niro mold, that can completely imerse himself into a character.

... I was debating whether I should or not, because that was awesome!!!

(apparently there were some anti-"Milk" protestors outside of the hall tonight)

Finally ... for those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted FOR the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue in that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone!

(huge applause from the audience)

I'm very, very proud to live in a country that is willing to elect an ELEGANT man President (more applause) and a country for all its toughness creates courageous artists ... who, despite a sensitivity that sometimes has brought enourmous challenge, Mickey Rourke rises again and he's ma brother!

Gotta love that Sean, he's so quiet and reserved! ha ha

I was so pleasantly surprised!!! Of course, I was hoping Frank Langella would get the oscar for Frost/Nixon but this was almost as good!

And I was even more thrilled when he gave his speech!

15. i know- I was thinking that the entire time
and didn't they recently split for a while?

I've always really liked her as an actress -- very warm and real. They make a great couple, though I've heard how difficult he can be...so my hat goes off to her:-)

25. I agree - I'd like to see her in more films. Yes, they did split
early last year. Rumors he cheated. Looks like a classic case of her
adoring him and it not being mutual. I think he is a great actor.
I haven't seen Milk - but Dead Man Walking was amazing. But there
is something about him that I just don't like.

I agree with you that he's a great actor AND I'm always glad he stands up for the causes he does.

I don't get how he can not adore his wife... It can't be easy living that life.

23. Why should he mention his wife when there are many in Hollywood who can't even thank a spouse
Due to Prop H8?

Did any of y'all think maybe that's why he didn't thank her? Besides, what did she have to do with his performance anyway? Other than coming round the set for a conjugal visit after he had to do all the man kissing scenes?

24. Well, you might be right - but to me - that's quite a stretch to connect
that travesty to a simple spouse acknowledgement to someone who has been
his wife for many years. Especially one who is 6 ft away, thrilled to death
that he won. She deserves an academy award if she faking that reaction.

I think the biggest thing about it sucking, to me, is that 99.9% of the
actors DO acknowledge their spouses. It is hurtful to her because
it is embarassing. Of course, I have no earthly idea if she cares or
not. Maybe she is much bigger than that. All I can know is how it
would make me feel.

Maybe Sean Penn is the saint who wants to save the world - like people
are claiming. But I think human kindness begins at home.

Not even a word about Sean Penn in the Oscar round up. They played a clip of Kate Winslet's speech but did not even mention the best oscar winner. You think they'd of done that if Mickey Rourke would have won?

He probably hasn't had a clumsy moment since he was 13. And his mind works the same way, apparently. :)
