1. The Game is called "Wedge Issue". They propose a bill they know will never pass
And they get their base roused about it.

2. It's another attempt at shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the poor.
And if you ever wanted a "torches and pitchforks" issue to go after Democrats with, it would be this, if there were any Dems co-sponsoring. Just abominable.

3. Nice. Another republican idea that hurts the poor and the elderly.
Abolishing the IRS will never happen. This 'just say no' party is getting crazier and crazier each day.

4.  Linder's statement:
Sponsor of H.R. 25
Rep. John Linder, Georgia

"While many in Congress on both sides of the aisle believe that change is necessary, they fear change as bold as the FairTax. All Members of both the House and Senate must be shown that the FairTax will revolutionize the American economy like no other single piece of legislation."

There is a part of me that likes point of sale tax....too much free money around, cash under the table that gets spent. Illegal activities, like prostitution and drug/arms dealing, big money buys Cadillacs while my tax dollars feed them because they have no traceable income.
The accountant in me is always looking for missing money.

9. The official "house.gov" site for the bill is hilarious
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 10:06 AM by high density
Here are a few things I am supposed to buy after reading their site:

  • Payroll taxes that our employers have to pay on our work are causing offshoring
  • "Hidden" taxes offset the low income tax brackets, meaning the "FairTax" is a better deal for these people
  • A 23% sales tax with 8% of that going to SS and Medicare is "revenue neutral"
  • The Chinese manufacturers and Wal-Marts of the country will lower their prices (and, it seems, their profit margin) to remain competitive.
  • A new federal tax on services like accountants, doctors, dentists, hair dressers is a good thing

Plenty of more amusing chestnuts: http://linderfairtax.house.gov/

grotesquely inappropriate nicknames for legislative proposals, e.g., Patriot Act, Clean Air Act, and now this.

    10. It'll never get out of committee
The Dems did the same sorts of things over the past eight years. Put up a bill they know will never go anywhere and try to use it as a wedge issue.

This time, the Pugs are playing with fire because a consumption tax is overwhelmingly unfair to the vast majority of people and overwhelmingly shifts to tax burden off to the middle class.

    12. I'm pretty sure that in a time of recession the last thing we want is to discourage spending
But hey these people aren't total fucking idiots or anything.

    13. Completely and irredeemably regressive, hurting the poor and struggling the most.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 06:49 PM by WinkyDink
This is another Republican attempt to have wealthy and poor treated alike, as far as what they pay in taxes.

I guess it's okay for Republicans to compare us to Europe when it suits their greed, but NOT when it would give us Universal Health Care, paid vacations, awesome pedestrian-only shopping zones, public transportation, etc.

Pardon my foul subject header language, but the Fair Tax is beyond-the-pale lunacy.
