1. So it was bad for freepers to make fun of Obama's ethnic middle name, Hussein, but...
it's okay for you to make fun of Jindal's ethnic first name, Piyush?

And, I don't know how you get "Pissy" out of "Piyush." To me, it just sounds like you enjoy mocking other people's cultures.

3. I wouldn't make fun of the name either... but I will make fun of the fact that he changed it.
Was he ashamed or what?

4. Lots of Asian people pick out American first names for ease
Not because they're ashamed of who they are.

10. I've thought the same thing
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 12:19 PM by KingFlorez
I'm surprised he didn't change his last name too, in order to assimilate like right-wingers think everyone should do. Anyone who is a minority and a Republican is likely ashamed of what they are, otherwise they wouldn't be in a party full of people who don't like them.

29. And it's pretty pathetic that none of these Republicans stood up and spoke out
against the racist railings that continue against the President. "He's a thug, he's a foreigner, he's Muslim, he's dangerous, he's a commie...." not one word out of any of them.

12. To the complainers: We make nicknames out of people's names all the time!
Sheesh.McSame? McLame? Mc..etc. All sorts of variations on that.

13. There might be a difference here...
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 12:33 PM by kirby
I have no idea of the original posters intention. My guess is that he was just trying to be funny. However, it is just silly to make fun of someones 'foreign' name (like Hussein). That is a bit different than making fun of McSame or Failin or TenderVitters. If he felt compelled to post it for all to see, I felt compelled to comment on it. In Jindal case, there is plenty to make fun of when it comes to his idiotic policies as well as his appearance on Meet the Press where his solution to everything is Capital Gains cuts.

15. I'm sorry, but that's a weak argument. His 'foreign' name is his
'given' name just as Palin, McCain, Vitter and Hussein are 'given.' Whether it's foreign or given, makes no difference.

17. That also sounded pretty xenophonic to me
Its ok to make fun of good ol American names but we cant make fun of "foreign names". What exactly is a foreign name nowadays? America is a country full of "foreign" names.

25. Why is it different? It's not making fun of it because it's "foreign"
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 01:37 PM by NYC Liberal
It's because it's his name. So he has a "foreign" name -- we'll make nicknames based on that. The Repugs were using Obama's names to compare him to Saddam and Osama, not to make a nickname as a little political jab. Look at all of Bush's nicknames based on his name. Sarah Failin'. Diaper Vitter. Ronnie Raygun. Etc.

16. I just found out that Bobby is not even his middle name
I always thought it was a middle name or pet name given by his parents. Apparently the just picked the name when he was 4. So there is nothing inappropriate about calling him Piyush.

it was offshore and the guy was Indian and his name was "Bobby".....and...

I want to see his birth certificate..how is his first name listed?

If it's not Bobby..then in the spirit of honesty we should use what the BC says.

31. Far right wing will have trouble with Jindal
The birthers arguement against Obama is not only that they think he was born in Kenya, but even if he was born in Hawaii he still doesn't qualify under the Constitution to be Pres. They say 'natural born citizen' means BOTH parents have to be US citizens. Neither of Jindals parents were citizens. They are from India.

I really don't understand how this DU works anymore. And I've been here for 6 years. Happily donating. Happily contributing. But apparently pointing out that an offensive post has been alerted by me is beyond the pale.
