Hillary outscores Obama in digital diplomacy

22 Feb 2009, 0744 hrs IST, AGENCIES

WASHINGTON: Barack Obama outdueled Hillary Clinton on the Web during their battle for the Democratic presidential nomination.

But Secretary of State Clinton is giving President Obama a run for the money in the latest Web 2.0 sweepstakes.

The former first lady has taken to digital diplomacy with a vengeance, contributing to DipNote, the slick State Department blog, and soliciting questions from the public online, a feature called "Ask the Secretary.".................

She also has her aides firing off updates -- more than 1,000 so far -- on the @dipnote feed on micro-blogging service Twitter and posting photos on the State Department Flickr page at flickr.com/photos/statephotos/.

In addition to longstanding websites State.gov and America.gov, there is an official State Department YouTube channel at youtube.com/statevideo and a State Department Facebook page which instead of friends has "fans."

Clinton is not just using the Web for public diplomacy. ................

1. Dunno...Obama has done that and is doing that...
this is not to raise any sort of competition but I'd aruge this point. During the primaries I was able to ask Susan Rice questions and get answers and so were a few people on this site. Obama has a site built for dealing with the recovery and we can email the White House pretty well and I'm not sure about answers but they do try to answer the public through Robert Gibb. And a few other things...meh. Obama's done it all and trying to maintain it even under the constraints put on him by the white house and whatever protective services try to keep him from his blackberry and comp.

2. "outscores" in unnecessarily confrontational.

The point of Web 2.0 is to bypass the MSM, and I applaud these initiatives, but there is no race to see who can twitter the most.

3. Um, this is a dumb comparison. 44 can't Twitter about his day and neither can his WH staff.
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 04:11 PM by ClarkUSA
They have more important things to do and there is a WH blog for general consumption. After the election, we all know
who's more attuned to the digital age of the two and it isn't Hillary.

7. Yep, she is a fast learner.
I'm glad that the State Dept. has been brought to the 21st century.

It's not a competition between State and the WH, but I'm glad that they are up to speed with the current technology.

24. Agreed, Hillary is quite the fast learner, as demonstrated in the Senate & on the campaign trail.. .
There's obvioulsy less room for error as SoS, so hopefully Hillary can overcome her diplomatic inexperience. I think she can, but the jury's still out on that one. So far, so good. No major bungles, although I wish she had come down a little harder on China for its human rights abuses. I understand the rationale for doing it behind "closed doors," but sometimes principle has to take center stage.

25. She'll try to overcome her inexperience just as much as Obama will try to overcome his.
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 07:35 PM by Beacool
Neither one has been president before nor SOS. They both have to do on the job training and they'll both make some mistakes. It's the nature of their jobs.

26. No question - I've said Obama's appointment of Hillary to SoS was a mistake . . .
But she may grow into the job over time. I just thought Richardson or Kerry would have made more sense at the time. I could think of several others who would have done a find job. Hillary is better suited for the Secretary of HHS due to her superior experience on healthcare issues

28. Neither Kerry nor Richardson have the impact that Hillary has overseas.
She's a mega-star, as demonstrated during her first trip as SOS, and at this point in time it's important to us to patch up relations with the world. She already is on a first name basis with most leaders of the world and has an extensive Rolodex of contacts. For example, the Empress of Japan would have never met with Kerry or Richardson, she very rarely meets with diplomats. She met with Hillary because she got to know her as first lady and they have remained in touch.

As for HHS, that's a second tier cabinet post for someone of Hillary's clout. Why leave the senate for that post?

;)

30. Holbrooke, Kerry, and Mitchell are doing the hard work.
Clinton is functioning as a game show host which is perhaps the best use of her celebrity. But in matching skills/experience to position, I agree she was more suited for HHS.

31. Kitten,
You bore me with your constant Clinton bashing. Holbrooke, Mitchell and every other envoy have been appointed at Hillary's bequest.

Diminish her capacities if you will, but she's doing a superb job and will continue to do so.

36. I was being complementary to the Obama
team. Hillary picked it up from them --and no doubt they were instrumental in setting up her SOS website.

The article itself is prob. unnecessary divisive. Please address the article rather than dump on other DU members such as me.

It is you who did the personal attach with your post--on a du member.

37. This column has nothing to do with teamwork, it pits one team member against the other and is more
complimentary of Condoleezza Rice than President Obama.

Furthermore, for future reference, if you have no political intentions when making a post regarding the effective use of technology, the Technology Forum would be more appropriate, however placing an article in the Presidential Forum, clearly has political overtones, particularly this close after an election and contentious primary fight.

"Obama's vaunted new media team, meanwhile, has revamped the White House website, whitehouse.gov, but has not yet transformed it into the dynamic, interactive and transparent forum many expected.

Clinton to some extent is benefiting from a head-start bequeathed to her by her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice, whose spokesman Sean McCormack pushed the State Department into the social media arena."

22. YES. They are both awesome at what they do.
It just goes to show how masterful Obama is not only of new technologies like texting, etc. but how masterful at his own form of diplomacy as he reeled in the egos of Bill and Hillary and got her to accept a high profile and very strategically important job in his administration.

Enough with comparisons.
