Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 11:18 PM by Ediacara
Hey dummy! A volcanic observatory is like the National Hurricane Center. Only for volcanoes!

How does this sound to you Bobby:

"Well I guess here in Washington, there's no hurricanes, so I can rag on money wasted for the National Hurricane Center and call it wasteful."

Idiot....

ON EDIT: Just to be clear, this is a response to Jindal saying that putting money into monitoring volcanoes was wasteful, and he wasn't even sure what that meant. Here's the relevent text:

"But Democratic leaders in Congress -- they rejected this approach. Instead of trusting us to make wise decisions with our own money, they passed the largest government spending bill in history, with a price tag of more than $1 trillion with interest. While some of the projects in the bill make sense, their legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes $300 million to buy new cars for the government, $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a "magnetic levitation" line from Las Vegas to Disneyland, and $140 million for something called "volcano monitoring." Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C."

As far as volcanoes in more populated areas (like the Cascades), I guess we'll have to rely on THE CASCADES VOLCANIC OBSERVATORY for information.

I guess he doesn't realize that a KLM jet carrying 231 passengers almost crashed the last time Redoubt erupted because apparently the pilot wasn't aware. http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/672551.html It seems to me like it's a good idea to know what the volcanoes are up to.

Of course, most scientists are saying it won't happen for another 90,000 years or so.

Still, it's something that needs to be monitored very closely.

I love the fake outrage over an amount that the bigshots at Halliburton wouldn't walk across the street for! Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 11:20 PM by Blue_In_AK
It's about 150 miles away so even if the prevailing winds bring ash over here, it shouldn't be more than a few millimeters. My brother who lives down on the Kenai Peninsula would probably have a little more inconvenience, but there are no settlements immediately in the danger zone.

I was here for the eruptions in 1989-90 and Mr. Spurr (which is closer) in 1992, and although it was a mess and smelled kind of nasty, it was manageable.

ought to be done voluntarily by private citizens.

I think all of us patriotic Americans should start making voluntary GEOS satellites in our basements from cardboard, tinfoil, and super glue. Do we have a Windows Mobile developer who can write us an athmospheric modeling program for our PDAs? I'll get on it just after I finish my voluntary soda can seismograph and citizen's scrap plastic spectrograph to help monitor volcanic gas emissions.

(just in case someone is not paying attention, this post is full of :sarcasm: Though, unlike the other projects I propose out of my voluntary heart, you can make a simple seismograph at home using a can.)

Of course anyone with half a clue recognizes "fruit fly research" as important genetics research and that "overhead projector" as a complex and sophisticated optical device used in teaching science.

What baffles me is, why do they so hate scientific research and science education? If it weren't for scientific research we'd still be stuck in the Dark Ages....

Oh wait. I think I've just answered my question.

41. Yep Bobby - volcano monitoring - no big deal
At 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck under Mt. St. Helens. Within ten seconds, the bulge and surrounding area fell away in a gigantic, rock avalanche. The avalanche created a gap in the mountain, allowing the release of pent-up pressure that erupted laterally in a huge blast of pumice and ash. The noise from the blast was heard as far away as Montana and California; however, those close to Mt. St. Helens reported hearing nothing.

The avalanche, huge to begin with, quickly grew in size as it crashed down the mountain, traveling around 70 to 150 miles per hour and destroying everything in its path. The blast of pumice and ash traveled northward at 300 miles per hour and was a raging hot 660° F (350° C). The blast killed everything in a 200-square mile area. Within ten minutes, the plume of ash had reached 10 miles high. The eruption lasted nine hours.

For the scientists and others who were caught in the area, there was no way to outrun either the avalanche or the blast. Fifty-seven people were killed. It is estimated that about 7,000 large animals such as deer, elk, and bears were killed and thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of small animals died from the volcanic eruption.

Mt. St. Helens had been surrounded by a lush forest of coniferous trees and numerous clear lakes before the blast. The eruption felled entire forests, leaving only burned tree trunks all flattened in the same direction. The amount of timber destroyed was enough to build about 300,000 two-bedroom homes. A river of mud traveled down the mountain, caused by melted snow and released groundwater, destroying approximately 200 houses, clogging up shipping channels in the Columbia River, and contaminating the beautiful lakes and creeks in the area.

http://history1900s.about.com/od/horribledisasters/p/mtsthelens.htm

At the peak of its popularity in the early 20th century, St. Pierre was known as the Paris of the West Indies, and the flourishing colonial city was home to almost 30,000 inhabitants.

Then on the morning of May 8, 1902, Mount Pelée, on the island of Martinique in the Caribbean Sea, erupted. A giant black plume darkened the sky, while a superheated cloud of hot ash, toxic gases, and magma fragments raced down the volcano's sides at hurricane-force speeds. Within minutes, the city of St. Pierre had been destroyed, its 30,000 inhabitants dead.
