Alright, at the risk of sounding negative...
Our President gave the speech before both chambers of Congress that we have so sorely needed for the past 8 years. It was comprehensive both in its empathy for the suffering middle-class and its detail in respect to specific policy objectives. It was an amazing speech that showed an effective transition from the campaign stump to the Presidency.

The Republican response was dismal. Bobby Jindal showed in 10 minutes that as the perceived heir-apparent to the Republican nomination in 2012 that he is not even close to being prepared for the national spotlight. The speech and its delivery was just awful. Sophomoric. Trite.

Every indication points to 2010 being another Democratic year.

But, do not get over-confident and do not get lazy. The grassroots/netroots were the key to winning more seats in Congress in the 2008 elections. From Kay Hagen in North Carolina to Jeff Merkley in Oregon, early and sustained support made these races competitive.

Again, pay attention to the primary races that affect you, your Congressional District, and your State. Find a Democrat that you can support, and get behind them!

On an individual level, I am going to work tirelessly to defeat Pete Sessions in TX-32 and help recover Kay Bailey Hutchison's seat for the Democrats.

Keep fighting, DU!

6. Well tonight I'm enjoying the fact that...
the Repukes' great hope Bobby Jindal just embarrassed himself and his party on national TV. It was truly comedic gold.

I don't live too far from MN-06 so it shouldn't be too hard.

15. Waiting to see who challenges Vitter
The best shot is probably Charlie Melancon who is a blue dog but he did vote for the stimulus which makes him better than most of the blue dogs.

16. Melancon could win state-wide.
Probably another Breaux, but that would be vastly superior to the alternative. (Another 6 years of diaper-rash)

17. I think Melancon might be a tad better than Breaux
Breaux comes from an era when there was a genuine southern Democratic block of the US Senate that was conservative both on economic and social issues. That block has its remnants but it is drastically fading away and in some areas being replaced by Republicans while in other areas being replaced by a younger generation of Democrats that is more liberal on economic issues and sometimes on social issues.

Mary Landrieu despite being up for re-election has had a pretty decent voting record over the past two years and she unequivocally supported the stimulus package. Melancon is pretty damn conservative right now but if he gets to the senate that might change a bit. When you get to the Senate you have a larger constituency with more issues and you also have more pressure to focus on the national interest since your vote is often crucial to get to 60. It's hard to be as rigid when your responsibilities are much broader.

18. I agree with you. He would be a little better
Since her re-election in 2002 against Terrell and her rage against Bush in 2005, I think Landrieu is as liberal/progressive as we can get from the South without being exposed to electoral annihilation. And I am ok with that.

I hope Charlie runs, because two 80% Dems in LA are better than one.

19. At the risk of sounding negative, I didn't like the president in that room
without his SS guys. Especially on the way out. I know the room was secure but it still looked dangerous to me.

I wish he wouldn't do that. In an emergency, it would be very hard to get someone to him when he's surrounded five deep in fans.

21. We're Reaching Saturation Point
While I'd like to say 2010 will be another Democracratic year...and I hope it shall be, it won't be anywhere near as easy as it has been the past two elections.

We've defeated most of the moderates that were left and all that's left now are the dead-enders...the Bachmanns and Cantors...people from districts that are crimson red and will be tough to crack.

I'll be very happy if he "hold" in 2010...and will do what I can to help Democratic candidates...especially challengers in 2010, but we've run out of the easy targets.

22. I think we can pick up the other Senate seat in PA
And in Ohio.

Louisiana is not impossible either.

As far as the house, LA-02 should be very easy to recapture. WA-08 is another that should be easy if Reichert runs for the Senate.

FL-13 will be a contest, but it isn't impossible.

23. Well said!
Whatever your name is...

Signed,
ReffJ

PS - Last election, I wrote in the name of the failed progressive challenger for my Congressman's seat. First time around, he won with my help by a razor-thin margin, but in 2008, having watched him in action for 2 years and vainly calling his office on crucial votes he consistently effed up on, I'd had enough.

His name is John Barrow, BTW, and he sucks bigtime. Georgia 12th.
