Did Shelby ask Obama for his birth certificate?

TUSCALOOSA | One of the more intriguing encounters President Barack Obama had as he made his way to the podium in the United States House of Representatives for his joint address to Congress was with Republican Tuscaloosa Sen. Richard Shelby. Shelby, of course, created a national brouhaha over the weekend when he was quoted by the Cullman Times as saying he had "never seen" Obama's birth certificate in answer to a question at a town hall meeting.

He has since crawfished away from the comment, which would reinforced some wingnuts on the extreme right who claim Obama was not born in Hawaii, but Indonesia, which would make him ineligible to be president under the Constitution. Shelby said he was simply outlining the qualifications for being president and that he said that he was certain Obama was eligible in additional remarks the Times did not report and that he was just making a harmless quip. (The Cullman Times has stood by its story.)

Anyway, Shelby was one of the last people Obama exchanged pleasantries with before he got behind the podium and from what I could tell, Shelby was talking to Obama a mile a minute in their brief encounter.

I wondered if he might have been explaining his gaffe in Cullman -- although I don't guess you could rule out him demanding to see the president's Hawaii birth certificate, which has been thoroughly authenticated. I also thought it would have been really cool if Obama had whipped a copy of the document from his pocket and waved it in Shelby's face.

Alabama's congressional delegation reacts to Obama's speech
Posted by Toraine Norris --- Birmingham News February 24, 2009 10:55 PM

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa): "The President tonight laid out an ambitious agenda. I remain deeply concerned about the debt that we are layering onto future generations of Americans. I was encouraged, however, to hear the President say that the key to our economic recovery is addressing the challenges in our financial system. I look forward to discussing our financial system at greater length with the President when I meet with him (today) at the White House."

1. I doubt it
The clown show is largely invented by the media, and bought into by folks who don't understand professionalism.

I do like Shelby's website:

7. Shelby should be shamed by Obama's graciousness.
But that would require a conscience.

10. Ala. Senator Rehashes Obama Citizenship Rumor
(February 25, 2009) - The Cullman Times is sticking by its report that at a town hall meeting last week in Cullman County, Ala., Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby rehashed the old rumor of President Obama’s citizenship.

“Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven’t seen any birth certificate,” Shelby said, according to the Times. “You have to be born in America to be president.”

The newspaper said Shelby was responding to a local resident who asked him if there was any truth to a rumor that appeared during the presidential campaign concerning Obama’s U.S. citizenship.

State officials in Hawaii checked health department records during the campaign and determined there was no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii, according to the Associated Press ...
