One of the most intense guessing games of President Obama’s new administration is finally over: the choice of first dog.

(CNN) – One of the most intense guessing games of President Obama’s new administration is finally over: the choice of first dog.

First Lady Michelle Obama told People magazine that her family has decided to adopt a Portuguese water dog, pointing to the breed’s medium-sized and good-natured reputation. The breed is also hypoallergenic — a must, given daughter Malia’s allergy to dogs.

The first lady said her daughters will have to wait until the end of April to get the dog, since her family is planning on going away for Spring Break.

The only thing left to pick is the name, and Mrs. Obama said she is not a fan of her daughters’ choices.

“There are names floating around and they're bad," Mrs. Obama said in the interview. "You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn't a moose? Moose. I'm like, no, come on, let's work with the names a little bit."

6. I like regular people names for pets

I love the name Jack. That's what I named my buck rabbit but I had a friend who named her cat, Jack. Names of other animals not so much. I have heard of a few people who name their dogs, Bear. Bear and Moose-meh.

I had three Standard Poodles over a period of 30 years (they were all rescues)and gave them all people names Shelly, Jill and Casey. :-)

It should be a positive to be a Mutt and not a negative as the word usually means.

All of us are mixed with something and this should be a wonderful tribute to our roots as well.

President-elect Barack Obama said on ABC's "This Week" that he had narrowed down the puppy he was getting his daughters to two breeds: a Labradoodle and a Portuguese water dog.

According to the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, the dogs are "great with children." The dogs date back to pre-Christian times; the first written description of a Portuguese Water Dog is a 1297 monk's report of a dying sailor brought out of the sea by a dog with a "black coat of rough hair, cut to the first rib and with a tuft on the tip of his tail." Long popular in Portugal, they were first imported to the U.S. in 1968.

The American Kennel Club describes the Portuguese Water Dog as "a loyal companion and alert guard. This highly intelligent utilitarian breed is distinguished by two coat types, either curly or wavy; an impressive head of considerable breadth and well proportioned mass; a ruggedly built, well-knit body; and a powerful, thickly based tail, carried gallantly or used purposefully as a rudder. The Portuguese Water Dog provides an indelible impression of strength, spirit, and soundness."

Not my first choices, but I don't think there's anything wrong with them. Though Moose is a fairly common name for a dog - I've known a few.

as it needs to be politically correct and not offend any race, creed, color or person. Heaven forbid if the wrong name is picked the corporate MSM will probably do a week of analysis and the Repugs will make an issue of it.

It's going to be interesting to see what name they wind up with. I was going to suggest "Piyush".
