Yes a dog- or No dog......
Could it be, that this family never wanted a dog and now they have to get one?

All American First Families had a dog - so they have to have one too!!!

It's some kind of pressure because I know how it works.

I grew up with dogs and had a Boxer when I met my future husband.
He was scared to death, but did hide it bravely for a while until our relationship was stable. He admitted, that he can't breath out of fear close to my dog. I realized that he was in serious problems and my parent took over my beloved dog.

There are really people, who cannot have a dog.

How about our President.
Do they get a dog because they have to???.....

17. Dogs are lovely and intelligent pets
Most of the time anyway. :)
That kids would like something like that around probably has little to do with cultural pressure. It is perhaps a western cultural phenomenon on the other hand, that people have them as pets to that degree - which would expose them to the idea.

But since they have been talking about since forever, clearly pressured by the girls, there is little evidence that they are doing it out of cultural pressure attached to the presidency.

7. More about this Question
Is it thinkable, that there are people, who don't want dogs in their house, but like them anyway?:

5. They promised the children a dog, and one of them is allergic.
They needed a low dander non-shedder.

Bill Clinton didn't get a dog until he was in the doghouse. They had a cat for most of their time.

It's not like they don't have enough room in the residence for the family and the dog. I mean, really.

12. Some people need to get a dog when they move to the country.
Maybe some need to get a dog when they become presidents.

And so it goes.

13. Why not until now? My guess would be that their parents wanted
the girls to be old enough to be at least slightly responsible. The youngest is only 7 now. I admit to having a dog even before my children were born, and they grew up with a dog, but it was ME who was the dog lover. If you are getting a pet for children mainly because THEY want one, it's a good idea to wait until they are old enopugh to underestand and accept some responsibility.

I've been a volunteer for a dog rescue group for about 9 years, and you wouldn't believe how many animals are turned into us or just taken to a shelter because the kids lost interest. It's really sad.

10. Can these folks even deal with pets & their children without being second guessed????
They are doing what they want to do. They promised a dog, and that is what will happen.

What it does show is that these folks keep their promises, period.

20. I agree.
This seems like an odd concern, are they getting a dog because they really want to or is it peer pressure. They said they would and they are.

14. They are getting the dog for the kids but....
I bet you dimes to donuts the dog and Barack will develop a bond like you won't believe.

I really want to see Barack taking the dog to work while the kids are in school. I want to see the photograph of the dog sleeping in the hidey-hole little John John poked his head out of the Oval office desk.

15. With the schedule that Barack and Michelle have had for the last 2 years,
I think it was very responsible of them not to own a dog, they weren't home enough. Now the campaign is over, and they are settled and home most of the time, it is time if they choose it. I don't think it is because they "have" to get a dog because they are in the WH, it is more that they are are all home now and if they are going to get one, now is the perfect time.

“So I’m 40, I’m not married, I don’t fly jets, and I DON’T HAVE A DOG?? I GROW UP TO BE A LOSER?!”
