Clark 's Kosovo stand receives high praise
The former heads of West Point and Annapolis say Wesley Clark's career, in particular his stand in Kosovo, will be studied by military students "for years to come." General Shelton, this one's for you.

Gen. Clark's stand vs. Milosevic praiseworthy
Dan Christman and Chuck Larson

Recently, retired four-star General Wesley Clark did something truly historic - and it has nothing to do with his run for the White House. Clark testified against the former President of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, who is being tried for genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal at the Hague.

For the first time in history, a former military commander faced down a former head of state in an international court of law. To stop ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, Clark led the 19-nation NATO war against Milosevic, which saved 1.5 million Kosovar Albanians.

In years to come, more and more members of the military might find themselves testifying against deposed dictators. Perhaps even against Sadaam Hussein.

As former superintendants of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, it was our job to teach young cadets and midshipmen about the demands of 21st century leadership. Clark's actions in the Kosovo conflict, culminating in his testimony at the Hague Tribunal, could form a chapter in manuals on modern character-based military leadership...

Clark's moral courage was instrumental in stopping another round of ethnic cleansing on the European continent. Despite opposition from the Pentagon and extraordinary restraints imposed by NATO, he held together a 19-nation coalition and brought the conflict in the Balkans to a successful end. Today, Milosevic is in the docket and the Kosovar Albanians are back in their villages.

10. Albright gives him much credit
I'm reading her book and she said something to the affect that General Clark was instrumental in carrying out Clinton's foreign policy in Kosovo and to some extent Bosnia. They couldn't have done it without him in particular and his belief in what they were trying to accomplish, which was affecting change with strong diplomacy and strategic force before all out wars became necessary. This was in direct opposition to traditional military thinking. It had to be incredibly difficult for him to buck the Pentagon in order to support Clinton. But he did it. Really a testament to his character. And explains why they hate him.

23. "A Problem from Hell" by Samantha Power
Did you read this, sandnsea? I just finished. It's very, very good about genocide and humanitarian intervention. I remember when Bosnia broke out the left of Europe and here were demanding intervention. How quickly some forget, eh?

14. in another thread, Clark supporters properly pointed out
... that the decision to go to war was the president's - ie, Clinton.

right or wrong, Clinton bears the responsibility or credit for it.

however, Clark bears responsibility for the conduct of the war, the cluster bombs, depleted uranium, thousands of innocent civilians killed, TV stations bombed, journalists killed.

17. Too bad...
The war was unilateral.

The war accelerated the killing of Albanians from hundreds to thousands.

The war aftermath was poorly managed and 180,000 Serbians were ethnically cleansed in an orgy of retribution.

I can't join the parade for Clark on this one.

20. Saved the lives of over twice as many Albanians as Vermont population
http://Blog.forclark.com/story/2003/11/28/81836/095
However, those Taibbi/Milosevic fans who think that:
"The Serbs are one of the tallest, most beautiful European tribes.... Why are the most beautiful tribes being wiped out by the squat and ugly?" http://Blog.forclark.com/story/2003/12/16/32318/644
might not be happy about that. But I am. And Clark is beloved for this, in Kosovo and here.
