I have pretty much sworn off DU, and am reminded when I stop here tonight for a brief look to see what is going on of why that is. This time I am so disgusted that I actually logged in to write something.
I didn't waste energy going back through the day's doubtless endless false outrage and holier-than-thou umbrage over the comment on Leno last night. I saw enough to see that the typical DU babble has been going full metal jacket.
Look, the comment was unfortunate. He was being self-deprecating and Leno poured on some fairly obvious false praise - Obama continued the self-deprecation with a "you're just trying to make me feel better" remark, and I am sure regretted it before he finished the words. He was not belittling, mocking, or demeaning anybody.
END OF FREAKING STORY, people!
Ok, back to lurking.
Edited to add a dash of high dudgeon, thanks to MADem.

I made the mistake of peaking in at DU on my morning break and got into a heated discussion trying to get across that President Obama's remarks were not as bad as the 'N' word. Finally I realized what I was doing, logged off and got back to work. It was mindboggling that I was reading this crap on DU. Then again, I usually filter that shit out, but today was just going to be that kind of day. President Obama actually garnered publicity for the Special Olympics. I'm not saying what he said was appropriate, but Christ, when measured against the truly atrocious shit that spills out of people's mouths, it is laughable that this is what some people choose to be outraged over.

not just depressing - scary actually. It is the identical personality trait to all the supposedly inferior-intellect "freepers" so roundly scorned here.
Reminds me of that scene in The Music Man when the women are all gossiping and they cut back and forth to a clip of hens pecking - "pick a little, scratch a little, cluck cluck cluck..."

most of the Special Olympics participants I've worked with could not give a lesser damn WHO is laughing. Oh, they can get their feelings hurt if someone works hard at it, but generally speaking getting bent out of shape over something like that is waaaaaayyyy too trivial for people just trying to get the most out of life.

I have to say that Pres. Obama is a master at turning lemons into lemonade. I honestly thought he was finished when the Rev. Wright (bogus) scandal broke but he made a brilliant speech about race and moved on.

but after 8 years of George Bush I'm inclined to cut Obama a lot of slack. I'm just so freaking happy that we survived 8 years of that idiocy that most everything now pales in comparison to what we've been through.

Obama apologized and its time to move on. I worked with special needs kids in the past and did not find his comment offensive as the intent was not offensive.

The people doing damage control were in full force today and they are the ones responsible for the shit stirring and poo slinging.
DU stinks to high heaven today because of posts like this one that totally disrespects people who were honestly upset, hurt and offended by the comment. :grr:

Sorry, I just can't gin up any credibility for that. I saw the interview. I have been a "hugger." I saw with my own eyes and ears the context. It was an unfortunate goof. I hope I never meet any "people who were honestly upset, hurt and offended by the comment" in person, because they might take offense at my haircut, or my weight, or the fact I am a white male, or just at the time of freaking day.

Honestly, I don't even think people understand what he said. I've been a volunteer for Special Olympics (a hugger) and huggers are told to be very dramatic and over-the-top with praise and excitement. When I heard it, I thought it showed that Obama was familiar with that practice and he was teasing Jay about his over-the-top praise. I didn't see it as a slam against the athletes at all. Maybe a teeny ribbing of the huggers but nothing that should have been offensive. Well, maybe a teeny bit offensive but certainly not BREAKING NEWS offensive.
I have outrage fatigue.

Maybe that's the difference. People with no knowledge whatever of the Special Olympics just opt to assume it "must have been" a slur. Jay was, indeed, acting like a "hugger."

27. Ditto. An offhand joke hardly worth mentioning. I don't get the "outrage" of it all. |

I suspect it's people who are not supporters of Obama and who look for anything to go negative on him about.
They'll keep at it until the next thing comes along.
Such sad little lives that such a thing means so much to them.
