Conservatives act like someone FOISTED McCain onto the GOP last year...
Edited on Sat May-09-09 04:28 PM by Bicoastal
...from the way they're acting right now. "They stuck us with moderates when our party is yearning for TRUE conservatism! We need to purify the party!"

Earth to the Freepers--your party nominated the guy. Republicans in numerous primary states could have gone with Huckabee or Tancredo or Brownback or Romney or even Alan Keyes, but voters wanted McCain--YOUR voters.

So spare me all of this "Republicans must stay true to our conservative roots" crap. After all, what does it say about the popularity of Right Wing Conservatism when a majority of the Republican party didn't even want to elect one President last year?

1. Actually they weren't crazy about McCain.
They had a bunch of folks running, none of which excited their voters. McCain ended up winning by default, not because that's who the Republicans wanted.

After he won the nomination he wasn't drawing big crowds, there was no excitement about him at all. That's why they put Palin in as the VP pick... to get the voters excited and involved... because they were definitely not excited about McCain.

2. Right. They chose the opposite route
Usually the primaries winners are the ones who cater to the activists, in both parties. And then, once they win the nomination they stat moving to the center.

Since McCain attracted many independents in 2000 the thinking was that he should be the nominee. And, as you point out, once he got the nomination he started moving to his base.

So he lost the base during the primaries, and he lost the moderates and independents once he secured the nomination.

3. They're putting it about that evil libruls foisted McCain on the party
Edited on Sat May-09-09 05:06 PM by nxylas
As always, given a choice between taking a long hard look at themselves or blaming those tired old scapegoats, the librul media and/or George Soros (yes, I have actually heard Freepers say that Soros funded McCain - because the primary candidate with the most money automatically wins, right?), they'll choose the latter every time.

16. They probably think that Soros funds ACORN
If the wingnuts want to discredit something, they just invoke the magic incantation "Soros-funded" and expect the rest of us to shrink like Dracula from a crucifix. Then they wonder why nobody takes them seriously.

17. You mean like this? Many other examples can be found.
ACORN Watch
(Sound Politics, May 29, 2008)

12. So let's follow the money shall we? ACORN engages in fraudulent registrations around the country. Who funds ACORN? The misnamed "Democracy Alliance", that's who.

What is organization so very misnamed the "Democracy Alliance"?

They are after anything but Democracy. They are an extremely secretive organization of big moneyed liberals and socialists. Their most prominent member is billionaire George Soros.

Soros seeks a permanent Democrat majority. And he will fund all sorts of front groups to get it too:

* Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN)
* America Votes
* Center for Community Change
* Data Warehouse
* EMILY's List
* Sierra Club
* USAction
* Air America Radio
* Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW)
* Media Matters for America
* Center for Independent Media
* People for the American Way
* Center for American Progress
* Economic Policy Institute
* Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
* Center for Progressive Leadership
* New Democrat Network
* Progressive Majority

Apparently he doesn't care if the front groups, such as Air America, defraud children's charities.

But I am sure to socialists like ACORN member YLB, that stealing $875,000 from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club is just nickel and dime stuff eh YLB/ACORN propagandist???

5. Yep. Voters did.
Edited on Sat May-09-09 05:37 PM by Occam Bandage
The Republican party would have preferred Romney. Republican voters didn't like Romney, because he was too flip-floppy, too Kerry-lookin', too Mormon, maybe a secret liberal, etc. Huckabee scared off everyone but the Jesus freaks. Thompson refused to bother campaigning. McCain was the only one left.

6. Proof that the Democratic system of primary delegate allocation produces the best candidate.
Had they gone away from the "winner-take-all" system, the Republicans may have had a candidate that actually excited their ranks.

7. McCain was probably their strongest candidate , Sarah Palin is the one
who dragged the ticket down. the racist palin supporters would have voted for McCain even without her just to vote against a black guy.

but Palin lost a bunch of moderate voters that would have otherwise voted for Mccain.

but even if McCain had picked a strong VP candidate he would still have lost. the loss just might not have been as big, but he would have lost for sure.

8. the other guys would have lost also , Huckabee is the only one
who i think might have done ok just because he had appeal to low income voters and with the mess in the economy people would have seen him as better on the issue than McCain.

but even Huckabee would have lost to Obama.

13. I've seen Huckabee condemned as a "Christian socialist."
No joke. It's ironic because most Freepers seem not to have a pot to piss in, but they are completely addled with false consciousness. They worship Ayn Rand even though she'd have been repulsed by the very idea of associating with them.

Those in the saddle there are either trolls or sincere and deranged. Much the same can be said for the majority of GOP voters these days.

14. It was only because millions of Democrats crossed over
and voted for McCain in the Republican primaries that he was nominated. So said the Conservatives I'm related to.

I can't believe the mental gymnastics these people put themselves through so they can blame everything they don't like on the Democrats.

21. lol - wow, that's a real stretch
McCain won the nomination fairly early, so your relatives must think that in the middle of one of the most hard-fought Democratic primaries in our lifetimes that Obama or Hillary supporters decided to bag their candidates so they could cross over to vote in the GOP primary, all part of an unsavory plot to foist McCain on the Republicans. Not very likely.

15. Sadly for them, McCain was the best of their bunch.
That's not saying much, but everyone else was downright laughable. At least McCain had some respectability back then (which he then lost completely in the GE). Romney was an idiot, Huckabee a jesus freak who wouldn't even win 40%, Fred Thompson a boring idiot, and Guiliani had nothing but 9/11.

thought about Arlen Specter. they hate him for being too liberal! They are the people who love the idea of Palin for President and think Rush should be running, too.
(Sorry - the thought of that bastard trying to run made me laugh...

26. Well, Someone did. Their candidates were competing for the title of
"Who is the most Bat Shit crazy" when someone stepped in, pulled the plug and John McCain became the chosen one. That's what happens when your party is a front for a secret cabal. Whoever did it was the same Someone (someones?) who preps the Right Wing talking points on a weekly basis. Someone has to write the scripts, it's amazing that someone has that much time!

BTW - as a certified depressive, I reserve the term Bat Shit Crazy for the Right Wing as opposed to normally crazy for people like myself!
