TIME cover story
Apologies if already posted

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1896588,00.html

These days, Republicans have the desperate aura of an endangered species. They lost Congress, then the White House; more recently, they lost a slam-dunk House election in a conservative New York district, then Senator Arlen Specter. Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities. And the electorate is getting less white, less rural, less Christian — in short, less demographically Republican. GOP officials who completely controlled Washington three years ago are vowing to "regain our status as a national party" and creating woe-is-us groups to resuscitate their brand, while Democrats are publishing books like The Strange Death of Republican America and 40 More Years: How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation. John McCain's campaign manager recently described his party as basically extinct on the West Coast, nearly extinct in the Northeast and endangered in the Mountain West and Southwest.

1. I'd say it is extinct in the Northeast.
When the Republicans lost their majority in the NH state house, stick a fork in them; they're done.

10. The Northeast is a great place to live - for the most part, no wildfires, floods, earthquakes, ...
...tornados, mudslides, hurricanes, and now - no Republicans!

11. There is the occasional ice storm and black flies the size of 747s, but
yes, it's not a bad place to live. We still have Republicans, but they're so pissed at the party's ideologues and radicals the Dems are starting to look better and better to them.

26. The Dems have all of the NH state gov't.
November 2010, NH will be a lovely blue across the board. The Repubs don't have anyone who can go toe to toe with either Lynch or Hodes for Jugghead's senate seat.

About all they have left is a handful of selectmen and mayors.

2. If they are such an endangered species, how come I keep hearing from them and about them?
I'd like to see them made instinct...and at the rate the media is going, it appears that they will be protecting this endangered species for some time.

9. Pssst...
Hey Frenchie, over here. Not to be an English Nazi, but, I think I know what you mean and the word is extinct. Instinct is apparently prewired behavior in animals. Extinct means they no longer exist.

I'm so with you on the sentiment.

It was inevitable to be a failure, especially after the disaster which was the Bush administration. Americans want science and pragmatism to govern.

27. They probably would not, too
Don't they believe in "survival of the fittest," meaning no government programs to help the old, the sick and the poor?

Oops, that a Darwinian term... Like everything else, the accept evolution when it fits their needs and reject it on different occasions.
