I haven't gotten far in Fallout 3, the writing and acting is a little hammy for a Fallout 1 fanboy like myself, but I understand it takes place in the ruins of Washington, DC, giving the canon a slightly political flavor (although the original Fallouts tackled social issues such as slavery, mutually assured destruction, the 1950s, etc. albeit in post-apocalyptic Silicon Valley).

The previous three were fucked beyond playability on release. It felt like I was trying to install and play an alpha version, or a shoddily-built fan mod.
