Judging by your work around here I'm sure that she has been an exceptional student.
I hope this settles down soon and they realize they are not helping. Maybe a break is in order for me as well, best not approach them with the same vitriol they throw Obama's way, but sometimes I just can't help it. Bad enough that I have to defend Obama from all the right wingers around where I live, even worse when I hear them saying the same things that the left around here is saying.

And just because you have a (D) after your name doesn't mean you're all that progressive - (meet Senator Ben Nelson!). For many, not just the "Kucinich election campaign", on this site - the president might as well have the red letter after his name based on numerous decisions that some continue to ignore, when if it was B*sh who did them, those who tow the party line for Obama, would be saying how wrong-headed those moves by B*sh were.
He's doing an okay job, but I believed he would be better than a "C" student on these financial, social, military and issues involving the war crimes committed by his predecessors.

as I understand that there is an opposite party and a corporate media to content with, something which you would rather forget. You might not think that they count for anything, but unfortunately they do, and they make us know it. I don't see Obama as doing a lot of things that Bush did.....that's what you see. What I do see is someone, based on the limitations that we have to work around, will get us as far as we can get before we are stopped. You, on the other hand, are riding on a horse that will never get out of the stable. At the end of the day, it's about getting somewhere, not sounding righteous while walking in place and getting nowhere.

I voted for the rainbow I saw in Barack Obama. A little of this, a little of that. A little white. A little black. And everything in between.
Two of the most magnificent moments of my life occured last year. When he won the nomination and when he won the election.
I was so proud of his words in January after he took the oath of office calling George W Bush and his entire administration on the carpet - certainly not what anyone expected. But what followed has certainly not been what anyone expected either.
And now he has merely swept all he spoke of that day under the carpet.

I had another magnificent moment just this AM when POTUS Obama gave his 3rd commencement speech for Naval Academy. He took on his critics again today in front of Military bigwigs and thousands of military men and women. He reiterated his beliefs that America is safer when we stick to our values and the rule of law. Ie: Gitmo
The amount of shit he has to deal with to do the right thing is sometimes insurmountable. Starting with the mega-conglomerates in the 24/7 right-wing media.
He has not merely swept all under the carpet. This shit takes time, planning, patience, perfect timing.
Breaking news: He has passed some important legislation.

14. I think that those "snapping up the right wing bait" are those Dems in government now... |
|
Edited on Thu May-21-09 05:01 PM by cascadiance
That seem to think that being "bipartisan" is to listen more to the right wing folks (not wanting to upset them too much), and basically being pushed into policies that support corporate interests more than average Americans... That's a pretty damn good "right wing bait" strategy as it uses indirect means to get us PO'd at Dem's policies rather than them trying to appeal to us directly without those Dems enabling them to work this strategy...
Perhaps Obama and the Dems should just say:
1) NO to the insurance companies demanding single payer off the table.
2) NO to those not wanting to prosecute the former administration officials for torture and other war crimes!
3) NO to those telecomm companies wanting to be left off the hook for breaking the law when asked by the Bush administration to do so.
4) NO to those banksters wanting tons of money with no controls or accountability to prevent them from stealing that money with bonuses, using it to lobby against the very people's interests that are paying the bills when derailing of meaningful reforms in the form of EFCA bills, the CRAM down bills, the bankruptcy bill cc interest rate caps, etc.
5) NO to those wanting to continue Bush's policies of dismissing civil suits against the government with State Secrets' Privilege.
6) NO to the coal lobbyists trying to rationalize any justification for "Clean Coal" technology.
etc., etc., etc.
instead of "swallowing the right wing bait" and avoiding doing these things in the interests of the people and their constituents, that would leave the Rush Limbaugh's of the world without any leg to stand on...

I guess I'm frustrated as I think we still have many of the problems we have before, only at times being more "disguised" with Dems responsible instead of Republicans, and therefore its harder to get consensus on what things we all should speak for here in terms of changes that need working on. Hard to get excited in that environment at times...

42. Did FDR have this "he is president of all America" to deal with? |
|
What does that phrase even mean?
You can't please everyone all the time.
Some ideas are exact opposites of each other.
Dick Cheney is part of America - does that mean his wishes and vision should shape Obama policy?
Why should anyone bother to vote if a president is going to not lead and rather "listen to everyone" in this new everyone is right, and there are no wrong ideas notion that's being tossed around like some sort of cult fad?
FDR had people who 100% opposed what he as doing - and he did it anyway. You think he was any less the president of all America because he didn't cave into a minority of corporate and wealthy interests?

Is what I mean by "president of all America".
Every president has an agenda, priorities, hopefully a vision and a plan.
But it's ineffective to say "this is what I'm doing, take it or leave it".
You have to at least give people the sense that you're listening to them...
And I wasn't around for FDR so can't make draw of a useful comparison.

What's happening is that the agenda, priorities, vision and plan are being shaped by powerful interests and the capitulations and back peddling are being eloquently packaged and sold by President Obama.
He isn't president of "all" America. Right now he is acting like president of the ruling class. That's is not change I will ever believe in.
"President of all America" has become code for "shut the fuck up" while the President does the business of Wall Street and the MIC.

There is nothing wrong with criticizing Democrats. I all for that. Our president and Congress are too. However, if you are going to criticize President Obama or Democrat X, state your argument and back it up with facts, instead of pre-school name calling rants (i.e. F--k You Obama, Obama is just like Bush, calling Dem X a war criminal, sellout, etc).
In other words, justify your rationale in a civil manner.
I agree about Spector. People should wonder why he made the switch and his positions. And it's a good thing people are giving him some criticism.

45. I did, to a minimal extent though. |

Only minimally because I thought - and still think - that Pelosi wasn't playing to her strategic strengths very well, especially with Reid in the Senate. Her strength is that she's a full-bore progressive, yet she's always tried to play the middle ground as Speaker. Truth is, she should be playing the bad cop in her role. She won't lose her election and the House is way more compatible with radical leadership than the Senate is. This would've then set the bar higher for a more progressive-leaning negotiation process with the Senate than what we have, AND it would've painted Reid as the moderate "good cop". I think the "Fuck Pelosi" garbage goes too far, but I certainly won't argue that she's doing her job well.

Right-wing bait has been taken and used against "fellow Democrats" for as long as I've been reading DU.
EDIT: I should clarify, though, that the majority of the criticisms of the actions of elected Democrats on here is not originating with the right-wing, and much of the criticism is also well-earned, IMHO.
