PHOTOS Moving In.
Edited on Mon Jul-06-09 07:52 PM by Jackeens

James Pogue installs the name plate of Sen. elect Al Franken (D-MN) on his new office in the Hart Senate Office building on Capitol Hill July 6, 2009 in Washington, DC.

Useless information alert: 'pogue' is the Irish for kiss. Póg mo thóin means 'kiss my ass'. Hey Norm :-)

3. Cool! Could you spell that phonetically so I can use it in real life?
Always good to know and use a foreign tongue. :hi:

4. 'Pogue (rhyming with rogue!) ma hone' - just don't say it to an Irish policeman when you visit!

PS Do you know the band The Pogues? Their best known song, Fairytale of New York:

Well, their original name was 'Pogue Mahone' but legend has it they had to shorten it to The Pogues because the BBC wouldn't play their records when they had such a rude name. :-)

9. But isn't Mahone an Irish name?
And if they named their kid Pogue he would be teased to no end.

14. Luckily 'Mahone' is pretty rare, Mahoney is the common one. Don't know any Pogue Mahoneys though!

10. LOL! That's great!
I just went in and told my husband I knew some Gaelic now, and he actually knew that expression. Turns out one of the guys he worked with years ago used it quite a bit when he was angry at someone. All these years together, and he'd never shared that with me.

Mahoney must be a fun name to have over there. :D

13. In Gaelic terms one of the worst Irish names to have is.....gulp.....Kennedy. It means 'ugly head'.
Seriously! It's an anglicised version of Cinnéidigh, which means ugly or helmet head.

As for your husband, he was obviously way too polite to share Póg Mo Thóin with you!

15. I think I'd go with the "helmet head" definition if I were a Kennedy
Really. Sometimes when I find out what these surnames mean I try to imagine the scene back in medieval days where they're first giving out last names: "Okay Sean, we're going to call you 'Sean Ugly Head' from here on out, and all your descendants, too." Under what circumstances would Sean say, "Sounds great! Thanks!"

And yes, my husband is a sweetie, but I did tell him I was quite surprised he didn't sense that I'd want to know how to say "kiss my ass" in Gaelic.
