The South Carolina Republican Party voted to censure Gov. Mark Sanford Monday—rather than call for his resignation—an outcome that makes it likely the GOP governor will be able to weather the storm surrounding his extramarital affair and remain in office.
The vote of the state GOP executive committee took place late Monday night following a nearly four-hour-long conference call and three rounds of ballots aimed at getting a majority of the committee to either censure, support or ask the governor to resign.
The censure finally agreed to by the committee called the governor's behavior a breach of "the public’s trust and confidence in his ability to effectively perform the duties of his office."
Sanford was also criticized by the committee for failing to adhere to the "core principles and beliefs" of the Republican Party, though the censure noted that "barring further revelation" Monday's action would be "the party’s last word on the matter."
The final vote was 22 to censure, 10 calling for resignation and 9 supporting the governor.
"The events of the past two weeks have been as divisive as they have been disappointing for Republicans. But today has brought a large measure of resolution to a sad chapter in our State Party’s history," South Carolina GOP Chairman Karen Floyd said in a statement following the vote. "Republicans came together to speak with a unified voice, and now is the time for healing."

1. Does this mean they still think Sanford is their best hope for 2012? |
|
With Palin out of the running, do they figure their base will say "boys will be boys" and as long as he keeps up appearances with his wife he'll be forgiven?

We have a very credible candidate for the Democrats. The best thing might be to have Sanford's miserable ass sitting in the Governor's office on election day. Especially if the national economy is showing considerable improvement, because predictions are any upturn will come a year or so later to SC. I think the SOB ought to be impeached for trying to turn down the stimulus money, not for cheating on his wife. Edit to reply to above post: I haven't heard anybody on the state or national scene say that his political career is not certainly over.

State Senator from Camden. His uncle, Bob, was Speaker of the House for about a decade or so back when SC was still contolled by the Democrats. We're hoping the GOPsters are going to damage each other in the primary and that yucky old Mark will still be stinking up the statehouse come election day.

11. I didn't think he could run again... |
|
I thought he was done in '10 anyway due to Term Limits. That was part of the reason he wasn't stepping down.. he doesn't like the Lt. Govenor, and if Sanford steps down it would help the guy in the '10 election.
That's what I've heard.. need to find some sources though.

10. Given what some have said about the Lt. Governor |
|
and the fact Sanford is term limited, maybe it's a good thing to let him finish his term. He's already shot his self in the foot for any chance at running for president. The next governor's race in SC will be an open field on both sides and no one will want Sanford's endorsement with as tainted as he is.

12. That's what you may get when, |

you have a Lt. Governor is even more bat shit crazy. Every time somebody wanted to rousingly ask Sanford to resign, they pictured Andre Bauer in the job. Sanford would be gone if not for him.
