Birthers are using stickers now
in Chicago anyway. I don't know if this has already been mentioned by someone else who noticed. Sorry, if so. Apparently there's a grassroots, "plant seeds of doubt" movement going on. I have no idea if this is brand new or has been around a while.

I went to the movies last night and before the show went to a nearby Walgreens. I entered via the revolving doors, and stuck on the handle of the door was a sticker that said

Where's the
Birth Certificate?

Of course I peeled it off. If I see any more I'll peel them off too, and if I can't peel it off, I'll use the black Sharpie I carry with me everywhere. Assholes.

1. They should have let this ridiculous talking point go last November.
It didn't work then and it's not going to work now.

2. I haven't seen any in my neck of the woods....
but if I did I'd peel them right off too or make them unreadable somehow. I'm so tired of this birth certificate nonsense, these fucking idiots need to get over it, Obama won fair and square and is'nt going anywhere.

5. I don't think it'll influence many people.
Most people probably won't even know what birth certificate that sticker is talking about. If they do know they've probably already made up their mind.

If you really want to respond, every time you see one you could place a sticker underneath that says, "At the Hawaii State Department of Health". You could even include the URL of the factcheck page: http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html. A tinyurl might be better: http://tinyurl.com/6n9zka points to the same factcheck page.

6. Why?
Do you think actual facts are going to change their minds? If the courts decisions about the weight of the evidence won't do it, I sincerely doubt that a website will.

They will continue to live in their chateau on Denial (which is not just a river in Egypt, I'm told), no matter what proof they are given.

7. I almost thought about writing "In Hawaii" on it
but it was quicker and easier to peel it off, since it was on the handle of the revolving door and other people were waiting to enter.

But yeah, I agree, I really don't think most people would know what the hell the sticker meant or if they do, they're either on the batshit insane side, or the sane ones who'd see it and think "what a bunch of loonballs." I'm not against stickers to get out a message (loved the anti-Scientology stickers that were around Chicago last summer) but the sheer idiocy of it still offended me.

8. Sad
Conservatives have legit criticism that would broaden the debate. Not saying I agree with them.

Making it personal, doesn't help our democracy.

9. Turns out the paper birth certificate they insist on was discontinued in 2001.
In Hawaii, there isn't a long form birth certificate OR a short form. There's only one form -- the Certification of Live Birth.

http://www.starbulletin.com/columnists/kokualine/20090606_kokua_line.html

The state Department of Health no longer issues copies of paper birth certificates as was done in the past, said spokeswoman Janice Okubo.

The department only issues "certifications" of live births, and that is the "official birth certificate" issued by the state of Hawaii, she said.

And, it's only available in electronic form.

Okubo explained that the Health Department went paperless in 2001.

"At that time, all information for births from 1908 (on) was put into electronic files for consistent reporting," she said.

Information about births is transferred electronically from hospitals to the department.

"The electronic record of the birth is what (the Health Department) now keeps on file in order to provide same-day certified copies at our help window for most requests," Okubo said.

Asked for more information about the short-form versus long-form birth documents, Okubo said the Health Department "does not have a short-form or long-form certificate."

People know they're crazy by now and they're not going to recruit any new blood to their cause.

It seems pretty clear that the birthers and the Palin faithful are probably one in the same.

stuck to all the lightpoles and signs because he couldn't get a single person to actually put a sticker on their cars.

15. Ah, so they are saying that accusation equals guilt
and that the findings of the legal authority in the matter are incorrect or invalid.
Oddly that is a common mindset on DU as well, in some other cases.

19. It is the 'perfect' circular argument.
They believe he's not American-born so the only birth certificate they'll believe is one that proves their point. Ugh.

20. Why are you messing with their private property?
I hope one of them catches you.

I'll put you in the same camp as the folks stealing Obama signs back in November.

If it's not yours, leave it alone.

21. If they were on the person's private property....
Then yes, I would agree with you.

These were on the door of a Walgreens. You can't tell me Walgreens approved of that.

23. In that case...
it would probably be proper to inform the store manager of the sticker and let him or her deal with it.

Or not.

Maybe s/he wouldn't care. We can't go running around assuming that others would or wouldn't approve of something just because we don't...

PS...I'm not saying the stickers were appropriate...just that people shouldn't take it upon themselves to edit what other people see just because they themselves think it's stupid. That's a classic Freeper maneuver, I think...

22. Well I don't know if it's private property, but....
I do agree with you that it's pretty much the same as Repubs ripping down Obama signs last year.

I mean, what's the purpose, really?

Because the stickers are stupid? So what.

If they're that stupid, then there's no need to worry about anyone sane believing that crap. What's the harm in leaving it there?

I agree...leave it alone.
