The need is $32B a year to make up for the the non-workable tax on Heath care benefits.

There are 10 million undocumented workers.

That is $3,200 per worker per year or $61 s week.

If you tie immigration reform and amnesty to health care reform that fills the gaps. Get the undocumented workers paying payroll taxes along with their employers and you have the money you need.

And you probably get some Republicans on board.

4. Well, real health care reform would be almost free
60% of health expenditure is public as of now. Simply switch to single-payer, and you can lower per capita health expenditure down to that 60%. Of course, grants and such would still be needed for research...so it would take a some above that

5. Ideas are welcome, but this is BS
Undocumented workers, overwhelmingly, pay taxes already. They pay withholding taxes on their paychecks (overwhelmingly, although some are able to work under the radar, and some of these taxes, who knows how many, are withheld by employers but not paid to the govt), they pay taxes on goods and services, they pay registration taxes, etc.

The way to pay for single payer medical system is through a levy on income. It is more than offset by the money saved by not having to pay for medical insurance otherwise.

Any solution that includes some sort of scheme to lay the costs off on "illegals" is pandering to the nazis.

7. Many undocumented workers already pay the payroll taxes, under SSNs not their own.
They get nothing back from that -- but it funds about 10% of the SS trust fund surplus.

And many also pay income taxes under SSNs not their own. So they don't get any refunds that would be due. That funds much general revenue.

So if their statuses were regularized, they would be paying into pools from which they might expect to get something. Of course, many additional undocumented workers would then be paying. On balance, that might mean a short-term infusion of revenues -- but in the long term, there would be payouts of benefits. Where would the balance fall?

But how about this as a source of funding: raise the FICA cap so that those with incomes over $105k would pay FICA taxes on the portions of those incomes over $105k.
