I Think Obama Is Wrong To Not Push For Prosecutions Of American Torture...
I still like Obama a lot overall, and am not "disgruntled". I just think he's dead wrong on this.

He's also dragging his feet with gay rights issues more than I would like.

This is criticism of Obama.

1. I don't see where he's ruled that out honestly, he's defered it but I've NOT heard him say
...that he's NOT going to do it.

I'd love for him to just throw Cheneys ol gnarled up ass in jail right after health care gets passed...that would be such a great thing

2. I don't know why, but prosecutions don't really motivate me.
I know I should be, but I'm not fired up about this.

I've read the articles and the posts, but for whatever reason it doesn't strike a chord.

4. You approve of torture and illegal wiretapping?
Or you just don't care? Or is it donuts?

9. That's not what I said.
If the DOJ finds some wrongdoing, then it should be punished. I'm just not hopping up and down about it.

I'm for it if that's the way it goes, but it doesn't rank too highly on my political agenda.

19. I'm more interested in ensuring that it doesn't happen anymore
and that there is no longer a legal rationale.

After the fact prosecutions do have value, but not as much as preventing them from happening again.

21. Counter: I think prosecutions are one key to ensuring it doesn't happen again...
I do agree with you that making sure it never happens again is the most important thing. That's why I think Obama is wrong in not pushing for prosecutions now.

22. Sure. Let's go for it then.
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 03:48 PM by Cant trust em
If there is an allegation of wrongdoing there should be an investigation and if there is evidence of a crime, then it should be prosecuted.

Like I said, I'm for them. I'm just not hopping mad about it.

I know that on DU you are either passionately in support of something or you're rabidly against it, but that's just not how I am.

11. It's not what you said.
But someone could say that the intent was there. Either you think the torturers should be brought to justice or you don't, there is no fence sittng on this one.

17. I do think that they should be brought to justice...
but if I were a legislator, I would be willing to let someone else take up that torch. Pat Leahy, rock on. In the mean time, I'd prefer to spend my energy working on health care.

Actually, even though it's not really on the map right now, immigration would be my issue. We need to come up with a better way for people to come into this country legally. Most of the inane immigration regulations need to be swept away.

16. Part of not caring all that much about it is precisely because he's not President anymore.
So unless someone has something that would absolutely send someone to jail, and for a significant period of time, I don't care to go through the motions just to prove some kind of moral point, especially if it would come at the cost of significant political capital. I'd much rather take steps to prevent it from happening again, because frankly, prosecutions after the fact don't accomplish that. It never has. Jail time has never been an effective deterrent for any crime.

23. Well, you're in luck -- Obama is no more interested in bringing lawbreakers to justice than you are.
Although if he were, I wonder if your attitude would do a 180.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, IMHO.

There's work to be done and in order for that work to be successfully completed, we need to remain vocal and focused.

A few ponies of mine:

I, too, want to see the war criminals prosecuted and ALL involved, personally and commercially, exposed and punished.
Dismantling of the military industrial complex.
Afghanistan - outta there!
DADT - yep
Marriage Equality for all.
Wall St. vs. Main St. - Seems we're on the losing end of this monstrosity.
Election Reform - Paper Ballots for all.
ETA: Healthcare Reform - I guess my list is too big :S.

What can I say, I'm a dreamer.

31. You mean starting a post that says Obama "supports needless death and disease"
is somewhat out of line, tone-wise, and people who post and support stupid shit like that can't turn around and play victim when they're told to beat sand like the piddling assholes they are?

Yes, I agree.

There is criticism and then there is stupidity. Unfortunately, too much of the latter.
