OMG, he's so CUUUUUUUUTE! They all are. The Prez is awesome with kids. I love how he goes to their level to address them and treats them like beings rather than condescends to them like many adults do to children (and animals, lol). Michelle looks absolutely lovely.

17. Children wearing earrings

Someone posted this question a few days ago. I responded, as a black woman that I do not remember having my ears pierced, they just were. I also mention that this was probably a cultural thing and many black mothers have their babies ears pierced.

This pictures of these beautiful babies is the proof. The baby girl in the yellow, I just want to BITE her, she is so sweet!

23. I had a new mom ask us if we would pierce her newborn's ears

I was working in a newborn nursery and took the baby out to the (Hispanic) mom so she could feed her. Out of the blue, she asked if we (the staff) did ear piercing on the babies, if so, would we do her baby's ears.

Kinda off topic:

You learn a lot about different cultures in the nursing field. We also learned that some Hispanic families keep the babies' umbilical cord stump after it falls off. Found that out when I did some shifts in the stepdown NICU (where the babies stay if they are too little or sick to go home--some stays for weeks/months). I started saving the cord stump JUST in case. I don't mean to generalize here, there were some Hispanic families who looked at me like I was a little crazy when I would pull out the baggie with the fallen off cord stump and ask them if the save it..but I'd rather that happen than a family be upset that they didn't get to save it. I'd just explain to the non-saving family WHY I was offering it to them.


Another no-no: Don't assume a holiday like Halloween is recognized by families. One family got really upset with us because we had put home made (by the volunteers) Halloween sheets on their baby's crib when we changed his linen overnight (when we did the baby bathing and linen changing). They didn't want recognition of Halloween any where near their little one's baby crib.

Yep, making (cultural) assumptions, never a good thing in this field.

To this day, working in an outpatient clinic we give out goodie bags at Xmas time (donated by the community). I still can't bring myself to say Merry Xmas as I hand them out...I stick with Happy Holidays!
