AMAZING! Barbara Jordan's opening remarcks at Nixon hearing.
I just replayed an old VCR tape that I had. It was the opening remarks of the Nixon Impeachment hearings. One could replay that tape of Barabara Jordan and prosecute both Bush and Cheneny using her un-edited remarks and they would both be found guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. It would also show, that without a doubt, the impeachment of Clinton really had no constitutional basis based on what the "founding fathers" intended. If you get a chance to play it, (I call it the Jordan red dress tape so as not to confuse it with ther closing remarks) find a link to it and play it. You would not have to use any staff time of the Justice department to try Bush and Cheney if you just used the constitutional research conducted by Barbara Jordan.

Now we have the ethically and character challenged John Conyers at the helm.

2. Barbara Jordan was a true American hero
Her comments throughout the impeachment hearings showed her deep knowledge of the law and love of country. (And genuine pain at the damage she saw being done to the Constitution she loved so much.) Her speech at the 1976(?) Democratic Convention was one for the ages, too. RIP

12. Do you think posting a copy of this link on the Greatest Page
would get more folks in this administration to understand their own constitution and go after George and Dick?

7. Some editing will be required...
Written version: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/barbarajordanjudiciarystatement.htm

"The President did know that it was Republican money, that it was money from the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, which was found in the possession of one of the burglars arrested on June the 17th. What the President did know on the 23rd of June was the prior activities of E. Howard Hunt, which included his participation in the break-in of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist, which included Howard Hunt's participation in the Dita Beard ITT affair, which included Howard Hunt's fabrication of cables designed to discredit the Kennedy Administration."

But besides that, its quite the premir on the constitution and the importance of Impeachment. Thanks for posting!

8. Barbara Jordan was a Hero...
and a hero of mine. She had an amazing grasp of what was right and what was wrong. I would love to have seen her in the White House. Her loss was tragic.

I was in the Austin airport several months ago and didn't realize that the Passenger Terminal was named after her. When I came upon the statue of her in the teminal...I just stood there for a minute, thanking her for giving us such wisdom. She was one of a kind.

Thanks for the reminder about the Nixon hearings. I will go find that video.

9. The 35th Anniversary of "Articles of Impeachment" is approaching
They were approved 21-17 by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, July 30, 1974.

My faith in the Constitution is whole; it is complete; it is total. And I am not going to sit here and be an idle spectator to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction, of the Constitution.

10. Barbara Jordan is a hero of mine
She was seen as the very picture of a brave American in my parent's house when I was a kid. That speech had much to do with her standing with my Dad.
I'd just like to say that my Dad was ahead of his time enough that he told me I should try to grow up to be just like Congresswoman Jordan. As far as I remember she was the only public figure my father ever told me I should pattern after. He thought she was the greatest Democrat of our time.

14. I worked the Houston Fifth Ward
when she ran. If you think hearing her on tape is thrilling, everyone should have gotten to here her in person.

Our country missed a lot when she didn't become our first black and our first woman POTUS.

After she retired, people in Austin used to talk about the evenings when Barbara, Ann Richards, and Molly Ivins would sit by the pool. Now there was a wall to be fly on.

God, I miss her, and I miss people like her.

brilliant woman for President. She would have been a great one. We were blessed that we had her voice at the time though and miss it still.

22. A wonderful and wise Congresswoman!
She will never be forgotten. There is an annual Barbara Jordan National Forum on Public Policy in Austin, TX every spring at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. This past year Gwen Ifill was the guest speaker. It's a wonderful event.

Anyway there is a wonderful UT Press book "Barbara Jordon: Speaking the Truth with Eloquent Thunder" Edited by Max Sherman which includes a DVD with lots of her speeches including the Watergate hearings and the 1976 Democratic National Convention.
