3. the "reverse discrimination" crowd is truly insulting in the way they assume... |

that minorities/women just don't study hard enough,
and that tests can't be culturally biased to give certain applicants an advantage.
these new haven guys don't seem to wonder why every fire dept in the country isn't going through what they are.
maybe these other tests are more fairly designed?

4. But you can bet that if things had turned out the other way and only black firefighters had passed |

the test and no white firefighters had made the cut, these folks would have been singing an entirely different tune!
As Pat Buchanan demonstrated a couple of months ago when he bleated and hollered about the fact that no white men were among the finalists for the Supreme Court vacancy:
BUCHANAN: You got down to four women, not a single white male — all women.
NORAH O’DONNELL: Did it ever occur to you, Pat, that maybe there weren’t any white men who were qualified?
BUCHANAN: Yes. No, it did not occur to me. You mean there are no white males qualified? That would be an act of bigotry to make a statement like that. <...>
LAWRENCE O’DONNELL: Well Pat, if it gets down to four, you’re suggesting it’s an absolute outrage if the final four are women. If got down to final four and they were all white men, would that bother you in the least?
BUCHANAN: I don’t say it’s an outrage, I say it’s affirmative action. They were picked because she’s a woman and a Hispanic and you know it as well as I do.
Don't you love it? According to Buchanan and his buddies, the absence of any white men in an employment pool is proof of bigotry while, on the other hand, the absence of any black people in an employment pool just means that the white people are smarter and tried harder - and any complaint from the black people about it is a bigoted attack on white people.
