Pat Buchanan even pissed of Rachel Maddow....
This blatant racism is unforgivable. I think MSNBC has lost me as a viewer if they continue to give this fuckin' asshole a platform. Infamous quotes from tonight:

"100% of Whites wrote the Declaration of the Independence."

"100% of Whites built this nation..."

And it's times like this I have to sit there and hate this country with everything that is in my being. It's times like this...that I forget that there are some good people who are White. It's times like this that I remember all the shit I have faced, and I expect to face from fuckers like Pat Buchanan. It's times like this I look at the American flag and see blood. When he kept saying 100% of whites did this or that all I could think was that then 100% of Whites massacred 99% of Natives in the United States. Then 100% of Whites oppressed, beaten, killed, and continue to marginalize Blacks.

It's times like this I have to wonder what I did wrong in life to be so hated. Why the colour of my skin and who I am is so vulgar to garner such statements; and I can say with certainty we are truly hated.

Keep it real Buchanan, because you definitely redfine when Whites keep it real, they keep it real racist.

2. He was asked by Rachel Maddow what he feels about
Whites Males who have dominated the Supreme Court all these years. Then He went on a tangent of the greatness of White Men and basically what they are due. It is a right for White men in a nutshell to have positions of power because 100% of them built this nation.

101. And forget the real Natives of this nation.
I saw his rant, but I feel Rachel made the point of his being 50 years behind the times when she could finally get a word in.

He is such a hateful old bag of wind.

I emailed Tweety yesterday and told him to stop giving this old racist a platform.

At least Pat Bagley of the Salt Lake Tribune has it right:

98. It *is* a white country... until 2050...
Buchanan, and so many other white men, are TERRIFIED that in another thirty or forty years white men will no longer be a majority in this country, even though most living white men over fifty will be dead by then.

Like any despot threatened with a loss of power, white males are freaking out about this inevitable occurrence. Well, many white males; I'm a 53-years-old white male Southerner and I wouldn't be terrified about it even if I expected to be alive forty years from now, because I have confidence that white males won't be abused by others as badly as white males have abused minorities for centuries.

that white men built this country,so they have the right to make the final decision.I know nothing should surprise me with pat,but that boiled my blood.especially when he referenced 100% of whites fighting in normandy or the civil war,and how white were the ones writing the declaration of independents,or the bill of rights. What pat isn't aware is that minorities would have loved to help write the declaration of independents,or bill of rights,or help fight alongside their white colleagues in normandy or in the civil war or in both world wars. But they weren't ALLOWED to.They were told their opinions were worth shit,by yes, white males.that's what the civil right movement was about,to participate in the future decisions of america and start being treated as americans.

114. Other notable military units of African Americans
9th & 10 U.S. Cavalry, and the 24th, 25th , 38th , 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiments - infamous Buffalo Soldiers. http://www.buffalosoldier.net/

World War I
and the 24th and 25th Infantry. The men in these units were considered heroes in their communities. Within one week of Wilson’s declaration of war, the War Department had to stop accepting black volunteers because the quotas for African Americans were filled.

When it came to the draft, however, there was a reversal in usual discriminatory policy. Draft boards were comprised entirely of white men. Although there were no specific segregation provisions outlined in the draft legislation, blacks were told to tear off one corner of their registration cards so they could easily be identified and inducted separately. Now instead of turning blacks away, the draft boards were doing all they could to bring them into service, southern draft boards in particular. One Georgia county exemption board discharged forty-four percent of white registrants on physical grounds and exempted only three percent of black registrants based on the same requirements. It was fairly common for southern postal workers to deliberately withhold the registration cards of eligible black men and have them arrested for being draft dodgers. African American men who owned their own farms and had families were often drafted before single white employees of large planters. Although comprising just ten percent of the entire United States population, blacks supplied thirteen percent of inductees.

While still discriminatory, the Army was far more progressive in race relations than the other branches of the military. Blacks could not serve in the Marines, and could only serve limited and menial positions in the Navy and the Coast Guard. By the end of World War I, African Americans served in cavalry, infantry, signal, medical, engineer, and artillery units, as well as serving as chaplains, surveyors, truck drivers, chemists, and intelligence officers.

Although technically eligible for many positions in the Army, very few blacks got the opportunity to serve in combat units. Most were limited to labor battalions. The combat elements of the U.S. Army were kept completely segregated. The four established all-black Regular Army regiments were not used in overseas combat roles but instead were diffused throughout American held territory. There was such a backlash from the African American community, however, that the War Department finally created the 92d and 93d Divisions, both primarily black combat units, in 1917.

World War II
After much urging from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in 1941 the War Department formed the all-black 99th Pursuit Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) to train a small group of pilots. They trained at Tuskegee, Alabama, and became known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The group flew important supply and service missions in North Africa and Europe beginning in 1943.

Black soldiers were generally restricted from combat, but the realities of war would soon blur the lines of race. One major breakthrough came during the Battle of the Bulge, in late 1944, says Ambrose.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower, faced with Hitler's advancing army on the Western Front, temporarily desegregated the army, calling for urgent assistance on the front lines. More than 2,000 black soldiers volunteered to fight.

Similarly, demands in Italy called the Tuskegee Airmen to action. In 1944 they began flying with white pilots in the European theatre, successfully running bombing missions and becoming the only U.S. unit to sink a German destroyer.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/02/0215_tuskegee.html

The 761st Tank Battalion was deployed as a public relations effort to maintain support from the black community for the war effort. But faced with heavy casualties in the summer of 1944, Gen. George Patton was desperate for more tankers and the unit was pressed into battle. The 761st had been used to help train other tank units for two years prior to its deployment. Consequently, the black unit was better trained than most of its white counterparts, Abdul-Jabbar says.

The 761st fought in the Battle of the Bulge, saw combat in five countries and helped liberate dozens of villages and towns and several concentration camps. But racist attitudes in the military culture prevented the 761st from receiving medals and other honors accorded white soldiers.

"This was Patton's best tank unit and they didn't get any recognition because whites did not look upon blacks as having any competence as fighting men," Abdul-Jabbar says.

After repeated rejections starting in 1945, President Jimmy Carter presented the 761st with a presidential citation for extraordinary heroism in 1978.

And of course Hispanics have served this country bravely in many of our wars as have other non-whites as well as many who aren't U.S. citizens.

20. Actually, African Americans did fight in the Civil War
http://americancivilwar.com/colored/histofcoloredtroops.html
Approximately 180,000 African-Americans comprising 163 units served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and many more African-Americans served in the Union Navy. Both free Africans-Americans and runaway slaves joined the fight.

In the Civil War they fought both alongside white Union troops as well as in "colored units". I don't know what their assignments were in the WW's but they were there in large numbers, fighting as equals, only to lose the rights their white counterparts enjoyed when they hit the US shores.

All of which, of course, makes Pat's bullshit even more enraging.

His comments about this country being built by 100% white people and 100% white people fighting in the Civil War/WWII just goes to show how far ignorance can take you to the bank. Of course, we all know Pat's a racist fuck but it sure was nice to have Rachel sp blatantly point it out to all her viewers last night (in case there was ever any doubt).

We should remind Pat that the majority of the people who built our Nation's capitol (the actual labor of building the buildings) were...um, not white but black. It makes me wonder what book he learned his history from and if it's the same book the repukes are home schooling their children with.

10. That's exactly it. I can't just sit there and laugh.
At the time, the urge to laugh in anger is there. But as it progressed and as it started to seep in all I feel is so much anger. It makes me physically want to cry and I'm holding it back now. I mean this shit goes back years for me. And to hear it perpetuated by so called "educated" by those who had power and could have had the ultimate power. It terrifies me. What price do I have to pay in order to get recognition and appreciation---even just a smidgen of tolerance? What did I do wrong in order to demand that I pay some fee...for recognition. I guess I see this in ways as the curse Haiti faced and Blacks will always face like Haiti. You can gain your independence, but you have a price to pay to be one of the "recognized." Even after having a Black president we've been regulated to the past...

I've always said that Obama gave me a crash course to the Civil Rights movement during the primaries. However, seeing Buchanan just brought me back to the time of Jefferson and his rape of slaves. Dirty plantation owner who basically reaps the toils of the suffering---but claims he did it all.

I agree the primaries gave America a view of the underside of racism in it's ugliest form. The country needed to see it and understand it in order to destroy it.

who knows nothing about history. Crispus Attucks was the first to die in the American Revolution, and many non-whites were involved in many ways in that war.

As for Buchanan, he's Catholic, right? It amazes me that he is so prejudiced, especially since Catholics were hated and discriminated against in this country at one time.

Remember that not all whites think the way Buchanan does--we stand side by side with all races, all peoples.

35. I was raised Catholic and am a bit younger than Buchanan
and there is no doubt that the reason I am so sensitive to discrimination is because of what I faced as a young Catholic. I could never equate it to the racism, but believe me, it hurt. That plus the catholic social teaching that was ingrained in me. I get the feeling that is gone, based on what I hear Catholics saying these days.

77. The KKK was viroently anti-Catholic
as well as anti-Jew and anti-black, at least back in the '20s. Sadly, I had evangelical relatives who were passing out anti-Catholic tracts during the 1960 elections (Mom would take them to be polite and then when we left the cousin's house would stop at the roadside park and toss them down the latrine there--a great way of showing me that such hatred is filth). Knowing that this strong anti-Catholic sentiment was alive and well in my lifetime amongst conservative circles makes me wonder why in the world Buchanan is so insensitive to discrimination.

118. I'm afraid he represents a "type" that isn't at all foreign to me
The big-mouthed, Irish-Catholic, bigot. The type can be quite entertaining, and fun to be with - until the bigoted stuff starts spewing. They often love their family intensely and might otherwise come across as regular people. But sooner or later, it leaks out. There's usually a great deal of fear and anger behind it all.

So it may be that fear and anger is the residue of a history of discrimination in the US- a history carried along by their parents or grandparents, though not really felt by their generation.

I agree that you'd think a people who had suffered from discrimination themselves would have learned something, but over and over again, it seems obvious that too often, they haven't. We've heard Jews spew nasty things about African Americans, or African Americans being virulently hateful toward gays, and on and on. It's a sad commentary on human nature.

16. I don't understand how Pat Buchanan has a voice in the media.
He was responsible for some of the worst hate speech of Nixon and Agnew when he was a young man, and continued to spread his poison through every Republican administration thereafter. I think he despises any other religion than Catholicism, and any other color than white. I'm white, and he makes me need to vomit. I have Native American ancestors on both sides of my family, as well as Irish Catholics and proper Englishfolk -- and whatever that makes me, I have no tolerance for the likes of Pat Buchanan

Who does he know at MSNBC?

17. Here is a snippet of
what he said about her and affirmative action:

That were it not for Ivy League dishonesty, Sotomayor would not have gotten into Princeton, would never have been ranked first in her class, would not have gotten into Yale Law, nor been named editor of Yale Law Review, and thus would not be a U.S. appellate court judge today or a nominee to the Supreme Court.

Indeed, the White House itself leaked that the final four court candidates were all women and Sotomayor was picked because she was a Latina. One wonders how many superior students and judges have been passed over to advance Sonia Sotomayor's career?

From college days to court days, that career reflects, in word and deed, a determination to use any power she achieves to create a society where the demands of diversity triumph over the ideal of equal justice under law. For Sotomayor, the advancement of people of color over white males is justice.

Republican senators should use this Sotomayor nomination to put affirmative action in the dock for what it is -- race-based bigotry against white males so that persons of color can receive the rewards of society that they could not win in free and fair competition.

I won't put the link up because the site I found this on was even offensive to me - but Pat is totally off his rocker, and to be honest, if anyone would want to put a face on the conservative base, it would be Buchanan's - he is a dinosaur and off balance mentally.

Yeah, he out did himself this time, and yeah, I was wondering just how far he was going to take it as he got whipped up and carried away. It was like watching one of the frothing unpleasant low IQ freaks at a McCain/Palin rally.

That is it for me as far as watching Rachel. And if I catch Buchanan appearing this much on other shows, ditto. He is a dinosaur, and while he does represent others with the dinosaur outlook, I don't want to hear from them anymore. I know their point of view, and I find it backwards and stupid and not something I take seriously, so why waste my time hearing them waste their breath on this?

I am still pissed about it. I am glad that Rachel finally appeared to be pissed about something Uncle Pat said, but until Buchanan has a come to jesus moment on this racist crap, acknowledges he is a bigot and states he will try to cure his disease, I am not going to support this by watching. She has him on all the damned time, not just an occasional deal.

Pat has been skirting around his racist views but he put it all on the line because Rachal baited his dumb ass.

This is what I heard from Pat

"White men can't compete with others on an even playing field. White men need to have special rights so they always come out on top"!!

I in no way hold these views, but the exposure is what is needed in this country. Pat and the Repugs that were on the Judiciary committee have lost the latino vote for the next generation.

Rachal did her job and she kept her cool about it.

I did not say slaves were the only ones exploited.

I said white men "built" the country by exploiting those who couldn't fight back. Black slaves, Chinese, Irish, Slavs, Italians, Mexicans... and a whole host of other people I didn't add but figured DUers would have enough brains to add to the list themselves. And to also recognize that the exploiters make up about 1% of the population and will exploit anybody of any color. That still doesn't mean they built this country.

Ah, excuse me? "100% of Whites built this nation..." What the hell does that even mean? It's obviously false on it's face because America was not built solely by "whites." And 100% of "whites" never did anything in unison as if under hypnosis. (Nor does any other identifiable group of people.)

I wonder if Pat Buchanan has been checked for any mental disease. This is really awful stuff and should not be tolerated on any major network or news outlet. It's blatantly stupid in addition to being false, unconscionable and unsupportable.

MSNBC should order Buchanan to take some tests to rule out some form of identifiable mental illness or disease. This is as bad as anything Imus said 2 years ago. If there is no physical reason for this, then Buchanan should be kicked off the network.

and went to school in the 1940's and 1950's, our schools gave us the impression that blacks never did anything. Buchanan is still stuck in that time. Unfortunately, many white people from that time never had the curiosity to learn our real history. I remember being amazed when I discovered there were black inventors and businessmen and doctors. Before I knew any better, I believed that only whites fought in wars, settled this country, and invented stuff. The only blacks on TV and in movies were portrayed as "slow" or "stupid." Most white persons raised in that time period had a lot of learning to do to overcome their preconceptions. Some never did and never will.

57. i'm wondering if the hardline right-wing might actually think this is a winning political strategy

Racial polarization tends to increase during bad economic times. They might actually believe that with a nonwhite President - they have a free hand to use language that has been generally considered off limits since the 60's.

They might actually believe that playing on fears of "the minorities taking over" and the white man becoming a persecuted minority will pay off for them politically.

No doubt there is a market for this demagoguery. I certainly hope and think it is a minority that will accept this nonsense. I am quite certain that the Republicans will lose any inroad they were hoping to build with minority communities. But they may really think that just as they have had some success with the strategy of making themselves the party of God, Guns and Guts, they may genuinely think they can be equally successful with a strategy of presenting themselves as the party of the "downtrodden white man."

It's incredible. I keep telling myself to not be shocked. Pat Buchanan wants access to Sonia Sotomayor's LSAT scores. It's absolutely amazing that this dude has a job on a job, and ultimately, it says a lot about his employers and the people who enjoy his company. After watching the video, it's worth looking into some of Pat's other views. Among them these choice words for black folks:

...no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream. Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks -- with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas -- to advance black applicants over white applicants.

Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

(...)

81. He just makes shit up, in order to support his feelings of white superiority. Even
a quick Google search will find you the information that there were black units at Gettysburg (of course, they may have fought for the "wrong" side in Buchanan-World, as they were mostly Northern units) and that there were many black troops at Normandy. You can even find pictures!

I do wish Rachel had just called him out on those outright lies. He named specific battles that he called 100% white, and that is nothing but a rewrite of history to minimize the contributions that minorities have made in this country. Even though blacks was treated so horribly, they loved this country so much that they were willing to sacrifice their lives to defend it.

Pat needs to be put out to pasture and not be given a platform to spew his lies and hate.

83. He is right!
100% of the writers of the Constitution were white, because 100% of white men were then racist and misogynist, most of them slave owners. That is really something to point proudly at, huh, Pat?

He also said that probably 98% of the "men" who died at Normandy were white......HUH?????

84. I thought our country's political representatives should actually REPRESENT
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 08:15 AM by nc4bo
the citizens of this country.

I think Rachel said 108 out of 110 SCOTUS were white males. :wtf: Hello all you cowardly racist, sexist and homophobic bastards, this country is made up of so much more than white men (thank goodness). We have white women and we have a huge variety of racially diverse males and females who I'm sure would have something positive to contribute to society.

Our representatives, all of them, should represent the diversity of our country. What's the problem here?!

Watch out Re:puke:licans, your fear keeps showing again and again.

85. People like Pat know their days are numbered.
They know their days of enjoying undeserved deference and preferential treatment just for being white and male are coming to an end. They will kick and scream and fight back harder, but their days are numbered. They are scared to death that the pointy end of the sword they've been wielding for hundreds of years is about to be staring them in the face. They have nothing left to lose so the mask of "civility" has been thrown to the ground.

The talentless insecure bigots continue to try to suckle at the teet of this country's great hypocrisy but the milk is running dry. Cry baby cry.

86. It's the high decibel "Get the fuck off my lawn!" spittle rant
the rest is just yada yada more of the same. He even started screaming, which indicates that when their complacency has vanished and they start ranting and raging into a froth it's because we are winning. Haven't we been noticing that they're beginning to literally scream. Glen Beck even reached a high note that was unbelievable when he was challenged by a caller.

89. Pat is a racist, classist, homophobic pig
and I have been vocally opposing him for many many years. Back when his homophobia had the starring role, it was just teh gay complaining, and so we did not have much help in getting him off the air.

I would love it if more people joined in to help rid the media of Pat, and for that matter his sister Bay. Better late than never I always say.

100. The best way to get rid of Pat is to stop watching him.
If his ratings go down, he is off the air. That's how it works. When he comes on I flip to CSPAN.

94. Yes But....
Why didn't Rachel answer his question at the end of the segment. I thought that she should have said something. Pat asked if the firefighters had been discriminated against. She basically said that they were out of time.

96. I thought it was clear.
They were out of time and they had a discussion that was getting heated and could go on to the end of the show. Second of all, I'm sure you noted that Rachel was ridiculously pissed off as well and was trying to tamp down her anger and not managing it well. When most people are dealing with a bigoted person and it seems to continue on indefinitely, they'd rather move on. I didn't fault her in that.

115. Come on now.
You must see how it's not fair to paint all whites as Buchananites at heart. I'm not entirely white myself, but that's just not true.

116. Buchanan is from a separate reality, one I care not to visit...
I suppose he forgot that a man named Crispus Attucks died on the street in colonial Boston, or that many blacks fought alongside Continental forces. As for the Civil War, black regiments fought with distinction from 1863 on. During the Spanish American War, the 10th Cavalry literally saved the Rough Riders on Kettle Hill, the 10th and 11th Cavalries fought with distinction during the Indian Wars.

Speaking of Indians, many joined the military during WW's I&II, they fought with distinction, even though they were rarely seen as "equals" and often not even granted citizenship.

The Japanese regiments of WWII, the black units that ran supply and built roads, bridges, airfields and camps...all while being treated like 2nd class human beings. I guess Pat forgot about the Yellow Tailed P-51's that escorted bombers over Germany, and these men who became known as the Tuskegee Airmen, never lost a bomber to an enemy fighter they escorted.

But the Great Pat Buchanan, purveyor of some of the worst history lessons ever uttered this side of a neo-nazi meet-up, military genius that never served, legal eagle w/o the slightest notion of what the Constitution is about...can spill his drivel upon the masses and expect them to lap it up. Some will, but Buchanan has finally gone too far over the top; his reality can only be found in some obscure place, surrounded by empty bottles of whiskey and gin.

117. I always admire Rachel's ability to be cool and calm and very
directed in her questions regardless of who she is speaking with. But I think this blatant bigotry even took her by surprise. She held on, but it was apparent that she found what he was saying both shocking and disgusting.

I agree with you - past time to put that jerk out to pasture. (And please, please, his sister with him). What he said was so incredibly hurtful and ignorant he really ought not to be allowed in decent company.
