Predict how many GOP Senators will Vote for Judge Sotomayor (and how many Dems against). |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 12:01 PM by Bleacher Creature
I predict 5-7 Republicans:
Confirmed: Lugar Martinez
Likely: Snowe Collins
Maybe: Hutchison (she's running for Governor against a RW nutjob, but can't alienate Hispanics in Texas) Murkowski Voinovich
Longshots: Graham Hatch
In terms of Democrats, I actually think we'll hold them all, but I'm never sure about Ben Nelson.

1. She will get 68 votes with 32 against |
|
In the end almost all of the Senators from states with hispanics are going to vote for her.

5. Nelson will vote for her...if for nothing than to have some very, very little |
|
ammo when people say he never votes like a Dem...if for some reason she had become controversial or it was close, he'd vote against. Putz.

10. I do too -- but 85-13 |

They will calculate that nobody will remember the hearings, but they could see a "no" vote used against them in the next election cycle.
Just about all the Dems will vote for her. The DINOs are mostly from Southern states that have large Latino populations. Sure, those states also have lots of white racists, but the GOP will get most of those votes, so I can't see a DINO voting against her.
And the COP Senators will go through the same calculus. Do they have enough white hillbilly racists to win re-election or will they need some Latino votes? Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia? Yeah, they have enough white hillbilly racists. But outside those 4 states, and a few of the states that have about 100,000 people total, I don't see a lot of no votes.
I'd say 85 - 13

8. Not sure. But, IMO, Graham isn't a longshot. |
|
From what I saw of the hearings, yeah, he had to attach something nasty every time her complimented her.
Which I think was a way of giving a shout out to his base voters in SC, while still giving him some wiggle room to vote "yes" on the confirmation.
What will be interesting to see is what McCain does. He's facing reelection next year. Wonder if we'll see a "yes" vote from him?

9. Graham will be interesting. |
|
I viewed his performance the opposite way, i.e., that he made the "I may vote for you" statement to continue the canard that he's a "moderate", and that his nasty statements reflect who he really is.
