Ads on DU

How do they work? I mean, at the thread discussing logging on national forest land, this ad was at the top:


"Michigan Logging Experts-
Comprehensive Management Plan For Your Best Timber Investment
mitimberconservation.synthasite.com"

I live in Michigan so that ad was quite specific to me and I imagine others may have seen ads specific to their state of residence.

Just curious.

3. As I understand it,

the ad engine looks to see what words are used in posts and then uses ads that go with them.

If you donate as little as five bucks to DU, those ads disappear, btw.

5. Combined with knowing my ISP

the ad engine then can select an ad that I may find to be of interest. I have no problem with the ads themselves and was just curious as to how they worked here.

4. Yep, they match regions too

Check when you do a google search, the ads will be specific to your area, particularly if its a kind of obscure search, like leaky toilet or something.

If you have a gmail account, you'll notice the same thing.
