Statement from President Obama on Walter Cronkite
THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary
_______________________________________________________________________________________

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 17, 2009

STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT ON THE PASSING OF WALTER CRONKITE

For decades, Walter Cronkite was the most trusted voice in America. His rich baritone reached millions of living rooms every night, and in an industry of icons, Walter set the standard by which all others have been judged.

He was there through wars and riots, marches and milestones, calmly telling us what we needed to know. And through it all, he never lost the integrity he gained growing up in the heartland.

But Walter was always more than just an anchor. He was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world. He was family. He invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down. This country has lost an icon and a dear friend, and he will be truly missed.

5. I weep. Barack is old enough to remember Walter, but not old enough to . . .
I can't go on. Walter was there when I sat on the floor of the cafeteria in my elementary school watching Mercury and Gemini missions.

Let alone JFK, Oswald and Ruby.

13. You never saw or heard him at one point in your life?
I was born long after he retired (well not long, but yeah) and I've at least seen and heard him a million times.

Or do you mean when he was active?

7. Very nice and says it all. Don't even want to think much
at all about what Bush Jr might have tried to force himself to mumble.

11. He was family
That is exactly the right sentiment. Walter Cronkite was part of our family. And we now grieve the passing of a wonderful relative that we loved.

He will be missed and also remembered forever - worldwide. Rest in peace Walter.

I thought this paragraph from the Yahoo news story was interesting about how his name became a job title. I didn't know this.

Yahoo News 7/18/09
Legendary CBS anchor Walter Cronkite dies at 92
(snip)
Cronkite was the broadcaster to whom the title "anchorman" was first applied, and he came so identified in that role that eventually his own name became the term for the job in other languages. (Swedish anchors are known as Kronkiters; In Holland, they are Cronkiters.)
