Obama challenges GOP critics on health care

Obama challenges GOP critics on health care

By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR and DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama pushed back hard against Republican critics of his health care overhaul plan Monday, vowing to fight "the politics of the moment" but gave ground on his tight timetable for passage of legislation.

"We can't afford the politics of delay and defeat when it comes to health care," Obama said after meeting with doctors, nurses and other health care workers at Children's National Medical Center. "There are too many lives and livelihoods at stake."

Without mentioning his critic by name, the president recounted South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint's comment that stopping Obama's bid for health care overhaul could be the president's "Waterloo," a reference to the site of Napoleon's bitter defeat.

"This isn't about me," Obama responded. "This isn't about politics. It is about a health care system that is breaking American families."

1. Yesterday on NPR they reported that Geithner said

that those who want to delay healthcare reform (or even go slower) really want to obstruct it.

He's right.

2. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) - Appeals To Patriotism - "U.S. has the best health care in the world."
Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, said on NBC's "Meet The Press" that the U.S. has the best health care in the world. So, I guess it is just unpatriotic to reform healthcare because doing so suggests that we are not the best in the world. Start a "USA" chant among some tea baggers, then rince and repeat.

3. This is our fight too...
We need to talk to our friends and neighbors and call our elected representatives. We need to make our voices heard. Its going to be a real battle before its over and we need to be involved. There are plenty who have plenty to lose if Health Care Reform passes. We need to make sure everyone knows there is even more to lose if it doesn't.

5. I sure hope Obama comes out strong. The current media info is nearly all AGAINST healthcare reform.
