FYI....if you see me kicking in the front door of my house and you don't know me, call the cops!!! |
|
Blaming the witness on this is as dumb as you can get.
If I see a black/brown/white person breaking and climbing in the window of a house and I don't know them I am not going to go ask them a series of questions. I'll call the cops and let them sort it out.
And if the cops are not ego filled jerks they will handle it in about 2 minutes.
This place is unbelievable at times!!!

3. Gates did not 'kick in the front door of his house'. |
|
He is a frail 58 year old. He's not kicking much of anything. He walks with a cane. Nobody much is blaming the person who called the police. People are questioning why a man in his own house was arrested. A legitimate question of racial profiling has been raised and remains unanswered.

that's not what this is about. The citizen did the right thing if it was suspicious, but she seems to be lacking in the "info" department.

6. I've seen a few posts casting aspersions on the witness. |
|
I don't agree with that. We know nothing about that witness so we shouldn't enage in that.
But clearly the cop was out of it. I can;t believe people don't get how deep this is. Take away the colors and just imagine giving the cops the right to harass you in your own home simply because they don't like the way you're acting.
I don't know what other rights we could possibly have if we don't have that one.

7. Why would a "neighbor" not know his neighbor... |
|
My neighbors would know me. I know them. Sorry, I have to ask the question. Was the neighbor so out of touch or just a busy body? Really, what is up with that! It looked like a pretty nice neighborhood. Its a good question. As soon as the cops learned he lived there they should have left and left the person who reported the error know who it was.

13. That's what someone else implied in another thread... |
|
that she was out for a walk. So she passes a house where she obviously doesn't know the owner, she sees a man messing with the front door and calls the cops?!? I'd lay odds she was white and clueless.

15. I'm a huge fan of Professor Gates |
|
and watched his recent show on African bloodlines in US African-americans.
AND if I were out AT NIGHT walking somewhere and saw him and another guy forcing a door, IN THE DARK, I would call the cops . If I were out walking and saw Brad Pitt and another guy forcing a door, IN THE DARK, I would call the cops. If I saw Jackie Chan forcing a door, IN THE DARK, I would call the cops.
BECAUSE THEY ALL JUST LOOK LIKE MEN TO ME, and in my sexist mind Men Forcing Door = Burglary.
(yes, I know there are female robbers, but until I hear reports of all-girl burglary rings, I'm assuming that women forcing a door are locked out)
And I would hope a cop would arrive, identify him/herself, explain that they were required to get get ID from someone seen breaking into a house, get ID from the person in the house, and then LEAVE. Even if the resident were tired and cranky from a trip to China.

I guess because the photos on the news showed the house at night, I made the assumption it was night!

9. I agree with the premise that you should call the police if someone is breaking in a house but |
|
once you have figured out after questioning the person that he is in fact the resident, you don't go and arrest him. We're not talking about race... we're talking about good ego-less common sense.
The cop arrested the professor after finding out that the professor lived there and further the department had to drop the charges against the professor.
I think the cop was ego-filled. That's the point.
