Hillary's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day
"Today, a meeting of Asian leaders in Thailand turned into the set of 'Mean Girls': North Korea called the Secretary of State a 'funny lady' who 'looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping.' Ouch. To be fair, Clinton stirred it up earlier this week when she compared North Korea to 'unruly teenagers.'"

1. Oh god.
"the set of Mean girls"? I can't believe that's actually in there. Actually, I can believe it. Anyway, I'm sure Hillary's been called worse and I doubt it really factored into her day.

4. "Unruly teenagers" was maybe not the most effective thing to have said . . .
I guess they can't all be gems.

However, the wackos in North Korea can be relied upon to make an incredibly stupid statement (or three) whenever poked with a stick. Not sure what good it does -- I think the world has already concluded that NK's leadership is completely crackbrained.

11. Actually, there is more to back story...heard Gore and Kerry might be tapped to go to NK as envoys

to discuss differences and to bring back the two jailed journalists.

I don't think Obama wanted HRC to go that far in her comments while the WH was negotiating the Gore-Kerry trip.

Funny coincidence, in the Senate yesterday Bayh and Brownback (FOHRC) wanted to push a resolution against NK as a terrorist state using material from Bush days. Kerry fought it down and prevailed - Lugar stood with Kerry.

7. A "pensioner"?
Sounds like something you'd hear in a British drive-by disagreement.

13. Knowing Hillary, I bet that she gave one of her hearty laughs
when North Korea's statement was read to her. Next they are going to threaten to pull on her pony tail and stick gum on her chair.

14. I loved the book you are paraphrasing

It was so much fun to read to kids who identified with Alexander.

But here, it seems that HRC asked for that comment with hers. It is true that many have said that part of the motivation was to make the US respond to them, the way she said it is not good, because we do want to negotiate with them. (Now how many threads would there have been if Biden said it with the word "gaffe" in them.) Not good diplomacy.

Here's the NYT story, which details more of what HRC said that generated those responses. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/24/world/asia/24diplo.html She deserved what she got and I hope that she did nothing to harm an already very very relationship. I think she may have made it impossible for her to be the key diplomat with this country. (The fact is she rebuffed the cabinet member in Hondouras in the coup government who refered to Obama in a way that diminshed him - do you think other countries accept their leaders treated that way - even if they are really flaky.

comments.

19. I didn't - what I am saying is that she started the silly childish comments
Her comment was designed to be demeaning. They followed suit - and both look bad.

The fact is that had it been Biden or Kerry, many people laughing at HRC's comment would be first in line to point out that it was a gaffe.
