What everyone is missing about Obama vs Joe the Cop.
While we, led by the right and the media, debate whether Obama should have offered an opinion over what happened in Cambridge, all of us are missing the pertinent part of what Obama had to say. This part:

"I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact.

As you know, Lynn, when I was in the state legislature in Illinois, we worked on a racial profiling bill because there was indisputable evidence that blacks and Hispanics were being stopped disproportionately. And that is a sign, an example of how, you know, race remains a factor in this society. That doesn't lessen the incredible progress that has been made. I am standing here as testimony to the progress that's been made.

And yet the fact of the matter is, is that this still haunts us. And even when there are honest misunderstandings, the fact that blacks and Hispanics are picked up more frequently and often time for no cause casts suspicion even when there is good cause. And that's why I think the more that we're working with local law enforcement to improve policing techniques so that we're eliminating potential bias, the safer everybody is going to be."

2. President Obama's repeated inclusion of Hispanics in this statement is also
significant.

18. Today, I talked with my father and he recounted a story about a situation that happened to him 30
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 01:29 AM by 4lbs
years ago.

He was an avid jogger at the time.

One day, while finishing up with his jogging, and cooling off near a bus stop, waiting for the bus to ride near home. A police cruiser stopped nearby and two officers got out and asked him to come with them.

He asked why. One replied that he fit the description of a person believed to be a peeping tom in the area. My father pressed the issue, and the officer said that a woman called, claiming a Mexican speaking Spanish was watching her in her underwear. She said that the guy was about 6 feet and was wearing a green sweatshirt.

My father said, "green sweatshirt huh? I'm here in yellow running shorts and a white t-shirt. It's about 80 degrees out and I've been jogging. People don't jog in 80 degree weather in sweatshirts."

Then the officer replied, "Well, you looked like you talked with a Mexican accent."

My father asked, incredulously, "Uh, I *LOOKED* like I talked with a Mexican accent? You saw me from a distance of 50 feet before coming over and thought I looked like I talked with a Mexican accent?"

My father then proceeded to withdraw his wallet, and ID, from a little pack he had with him and showed it to the officer. He said that he was a US citizen born just a few miles north of where they were.

The officer just said, "Ok", and left with his partner.

My father told me that he felt what 'saved' him was being at that bus stop, with other people waiting for the bus. They started to take notice of the incident with the police. He feels that if he had been there by himself, with no one else around, the police would have just detained him and hauled him off for further questioning, before being eventually released.

5. That's the big part I remembered out of the Lesson, the Prof. Pres. teaching.
He's always teaching a lesson to be learned. Its what most people pick up when they listen. Its the media and pukes and imbecile that sound byte and don't listen and spin and cannot comprehend (which has a lot to do with the education system that the media and pukes prefer the sheeples get).

7. State goverments throughout the land need to take this on board
Governors and state legislature have had the sign.

Unfortunately not all cops are squeaky clean. I wish that they were. I usually have great repsect for our police officers and the hard job that they are doing.

is just a smokescreen.

9. And something else I haven't seen anyone mention
Though maybe I just missed it. It is this: Why was a reporter asking Obama about this at a press conference in the first place? It just seemed very odd to me.

13. Yes it was. Somehow that is missed by authoritarian taint lickers and even smart people like
Jon Stewart.

Hell, the man had to catch himself to keep it to behaved stupidly. I think he almost simply said dumb and that would be accurate to. It was fucking stupid to arrest this man and if he was sassy or "spoke peculiarly" then so the fuck what. Blue shirt needs to skip along to his next doughnut and whatever skank he's fucking around on his wife with.

16. yep, and that's why the cop union there said he was, 'dead wrong' - it's sickening!
they know they do it, and it's bullshit... of course Gates got p-off! he's an old black man, he's dealt with judgment like that for a long time. think of how upsetting it would be. Cop was too proud to bite his tongue and just say, sorry for the confusion, we just responded to the call, I am deeply sorry to upset you.

I can just see the two of them whipping up the teabagging birthers at rallies across this great nation of ours. :eyes:

And they can be introduced by Morning Joe ... aka Joe the Douche.

20. Not everyone, it is just that the media themselves are choosing to ignore the rest
because then they would have to do more investigative journalism to support the rest of it....you wouldn't want them to go out of their way would you and have them actually have to work harder?
