Cops: Man impersonated officer
Neighbors even thought Mechanicville man was lawman, authorities say

By DENNIS YUSKO, Staff writer
First published in print: Friday, June 19, 2009

MECHANICVILLE -- A 25-year-old electronics contractor is in custody for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

Desmond hotels
City police arrested Evan V. Kane of Waterford during a traffic stop in the city on Tuesday when he allegedly identified himself as a police officer, Lt. William Rabbitt said. The arrest marks the second time this month that someone in the Capital Region has been charged with impersonating a police officer.

Kane, of Saratoga Avenue, was charged with second-degree criminal impersonation, a misdemeanor, and was taken to Saratoga County jail on $1,000 bail. He is the owner of a 2008 Dodge Charger that resembles a police car, as it is equipped with a police bar in the front, lights on its dashboard and visors and special antennas, police said.

"His own neighbors thought he was a cop," Rabbitt said.

The nerve of some people.

of a rapist/murderer who gained access to women by stopping them saying they were speeding and having them get out of the car. You bet you have the right to ask for proper ID.

9. A long history of reasons to question them
I recently saw the film 'The Changeling' which is based on actual events. My Mom told me the story when I was a child, because she lived through the events. She did not want me trusting 'authority' on cues from clothing or on the word of one person, ever. When I was a kid, there was a child attacker who dressed as a clown or as a policeman to gain the trust of the kids he took.
Any decent law enforcement officer would be happy to be asked for identification. An officer who balks at that request should be instantly suspect and should face automatic investigation of his or her entire record. Citizens are supposed to ask for ID. Badge numbers are supposed to be easy to read and in place with a name for a reason. The police have no right at all to hide their identity from those they engage or who engage them. In fact, they are required by law to identify themselves upon request.

and they can haul your ass to jail.

11. not only for ID purposes, but if Gates felt he was being treated unjustly (which he was) he needed
the police officer's name and ID number to make a complaint.

12. There have been incidents in which men impersonated police so they could make traffic stops
on attractive women, just so they could threaten and frighten the women into participating in some sort of sex act with them in order to avoid "getting a ticket."

Any woman driving alone who doesn't ask a cop who stops her to show his badge (and get a good look at it, to make sure it didn't come out of a toy police kit) is a fool.

13. I was stopped by a police officer about nine years ago
in Indianapolis. He RAN up to my car and was yelling at me about the fact that I was speeding. I may have been going five miles over. It was Sunday morning, I was the only person on the interstate at that time, and the car was unmarked. I got suspicious.

I asked to see his ID and badge number. He got so flustered that he then just said, "Have a nice day." and stormed off.

I later told what happened to my boyfriend (now husband). He said, "I have a friend who is a Sherriff's Deputy that told me about a guy impersonating an officer. He stops young women driving alone. That guy wasn't a police officer."

I believe I dodged a very bad situation by asking for that ID.

14. Why not?
I usually don't ask. I just look at the badge number or anything else which can identify an officer if he/she is acting like a jerk and write it down.

Case in Point: When the bombing started on Iraq, I was demonstrating at the Federal Building in West L.A. Some asshole motorcycle L.A. cop stopped in the middle of Wilshire on the 405 overpass, got off his bike and ran over and shoved a young, blond female to the ground ~~ hitting her from the back. He was huge ~~ well over 200 pounds ~~ and she was an itty bit. She was doing NOTHING but walking quietly on the sidewalk and holding a protest sign. By the time the asshole turned around, I was there and writing his badge number and the plate number of the cyle down. They used me as a witness against the asshole.

15. The police report does not mention that Gates asked for ID
GAtes says he asked for it, and the police officer doesn't mention it. it's a he-said-she-said situation here. Very hard to reach a conclusion without other witnesses' accounts. Here's the police narration of what allegedly happened: http://www.amnation.com/vfr/Police%20report%20on%20Gates%20arrest.PDF

18. Incorrect. Crowley's own report states very clearly Dr. Gates DID..
ask for identification from Crowley:

"Gates initially refused, demanding I show him identification but then did supply me..."
